What's the Pickup of Axis

Hey Guys
I'm new here and i have a Axis. I want to change the bridge pickup because its a little bit soft for me playing metal riffs. Can anybody tell me whats the original PU of the Axis?? Someone used to tell me its Dimazio Tonezone, is it right??

It's custom wound my DiMarzio for EBMM. You can't buy that pickup on its own.

I'll let somebody who's tried both chime in, I'm not sure about that.

The stock humbucker does have a lot of output, though. An easy solution might be to shim the pickup (put a small piece of wood underneath it to raise it up). Cheaper than buying a new pickup.

If you call the Dimarzio people they will tell you that the "Tonezone" is "nearest" to the Axis bridge pickup.

Since I enjoy changing out pickups on my guitars, here's a couple notes:

The "Tonezone" is a "power" pack pickup, no doubt! However, to ME it lacks personality and character. Yes, it's loud and punchy, but I don't use mine now becuase of that.

The Super Distortion is another power pickup, in my estimation that has a lot of character, personality and punch.

Also the the Norton pickup is awesome for punch, extremely musical, harmonics, etc...

One added note, don't expect that the pickup bolt down screws automatically fit the metal holes or body holes - they don't! Also, the bracket on one or the other may be "taller".

You may have to make decisions on which screw to use or what hole to "bore" larger (i.e., wood body or metal bracket). Remember, you may want to go back to the original some time in the future.

Thanks a lot ,but i like playing metal as well as shred. the original one seems a little bit weak.

No i use JCM800 and some pedals, but MM sounds much much weaker than my usa jackson.

Well, I just got the axis, played it a few days, and then sent it off to be refinished, and put the ToneZone in when I got it back 14 days later, so I didn't really get a direct comparison, but I think the stock pickup is kind of dissapointing - it felt a little anonymous. The tonezone was much much better, although I don't really play metal, more like hard rock.

Is the volume turned all the way up? But seriously the Axis has some serious punch. Have you tried adjusting the EQ on the JCM800 The Jackson and the EBMM are two totally different guitars which could/do require a different EQ setting.

Yes the volume is always 10, i mean it has lots of bass and middle, but it doesnt sounds like metal. It lacks of something. i think you can feel it when you play some metal riff.

Have you checked out the EBMM JP series of guitars. It sounds like exactly what your after...

Just got the reply from EBMM, he said the neck PU is Air Norton and bridge one is Tonezone...
Maybe i should try Duncan on musicman???

The main problem in this thread, is that you don't describe what is missing "for metal". Does the stock PU lack output? highs? mids? definition? tightness? bass?

Without telling us what you want the PU to do (or what the stock PU doesn't do), it is terribly difficult to point you in the right direction... With this said, I'll obviously give it a go anyway

To me the Axis bridge PU (just like the Tone Zone) is too muffled, dark, undefined and, well, a bit boring, to be honest.

As far as high output DiMarzio PUs, I'd go for either the D-Sonic (which IMHO works best with the bar close to the bridge), the Evo 2 or the Super Distortion. Just like the Tone Zone all of these PUs have the output, bass and mids to really push the front end... but they are much more defined, have much tighter bass response and give you much more cut. Oh, and they all have that illusive thing I like to call "character".

Thanks Eske, i know i should explain what kind of sound i want, but its not that easy to describe the sound i like, i have a USA jackson, I just want the bridge PU of Axis can be closer to the tune from TB-4 on jackson.

Damn you - thanks to you I just took the bus to my local gear pusher and bought a super distortion to put in.
