I am a less-is-more groover who usually plays fingerstyle and I will use a pick for faster stuff. I am not a slapper. My EBMM is a blue pearl Sterling H. I LOVE the oil/wax neck treatment that these basses have! The biggest influences on my playing are Jamerson, McCartney, John McVie, Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash) and Roland Salley (Chris Isaak). My favorite bassist to see live is Roscoe Beck. :)

My two main influences are Bernard Edwards and Stuart Zender, I like the less is more philosophy but like to slap as well. The stingray sounds great for both, and nails the classic disco sound.

I started playing beacause of Simon Gallup of The Cure.
So he's obviously my main influence,
I would say also Justin Chancellor, (Tool) Andy Rourke (the Smiths), Graham Bailey (The Sound)

I play with both pick and fingers but I'm mostly a pick player.

I like mostly rock-type stuff but dabble in everything. I don't slap much either, but love a good groove.
In terms of bass player influences I'd have to say McCartney, John Paul Jones(Zeppelin), Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction), John Deacon (Queen) and yes, dare I say it here, Flea.

Mainly Fingerstyle player with some selective slapping. Will use a pick if song calls for it.

Some of my fave "melodic groove" bassists
Paul Denman - Sade
Andy Rourke - The Smiths
Charles Levi - My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult

I really like the Funkier up beat Acid Jazz kind of grooves (Jamiroquai, Bluezeum).

I like grooves that make you want to get "BZ" - hmmm, yeah, baby!

well i play in a cover band that plays many different styles of music (as long as they
are/were in the top 40) bands like metallica, red hot chili peppers, greenday, simple plan, rage against the machine, ac/dc, blink 182, ben Harper, stevie wonder and so on...... so i have many different styles i have to play, but in my own time i love to slap, if i tried to slap to most of our songs in our set lists i would be shot!!! so i do it in my own time. i don't really have influences but to give you a couple i do like it would be flea and victor wooten they both are great players

My main influences are New Orleans Tuba players, Kerwin James comes to mind, but there are many more. George Porter, Larry Graham, Sterling Ball and Bobby Kelly would be my main electric bass Gods!

As for style, anyone seen my pictures? :D

My main influances are : Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Primus/Les Claypool, John Patitucci, Ray Brown, Dream Theater, Jaco.

And well ,these are the kind of music I play when I'm alone. In my band it is more of a jazz metal oriented.

When I started I loved the playing of Mark Adams, Verdine White, Hollis Melson, Kirkwood Coakley, Reggie McBride, Ray Griffin, Mel Schacher and Dee Murray among others. The first time I heard Reggie McBride do that short bass solo on Tommy Bolin's "Post Toastee" I knew I had to play the bass.

Great thread, Basspro.

Because I didn't start playing until I turned 40, and because I primarily play original music with singer songwriters, I'm mostly a pocket player, finger style, follow the kick. No slappin' or poppin' allowed with these guys.

Currently, I play in 3 bands and am a sub for a 4th. These include an all original, singer songwriter band (my son calls it adult contemporary - we call it indie pop;)), a cajun zydeco band (which is nothing but fun to play, even if it is just root 5), our neighborhood basement band (where we all get together and drink tequila and play music - amazing how good you sound after a few shots of tequila), and finally sub for a local blues/rock band (which is fun but I can handle only so much blues).

I've been influenced by so many players. It's too hard to point to any one. However, songwriters who play bass certainly stand out (McCartney, Sting, Sheryl Crow, etc....)

How bout you, Basspro? You haven't answered this question yet. :D

Hey Tbone,
Well i grew up listening to Led Zepplin so John Paul Jones had a big influence on my style of playing. I also loved the motown sound of the Funk brothers.
And so many other great musicians like Jaco, Dee Murray,John Deacon,Victor Wooten and the list go's on and on.
I play anything from rock, funk, blues, metal, and indie mostly.i play finger (jazz style) finger nail or use a pick and some slap pop depending on the song.
I got my first guitar at 12 played in a few live gigs in LA at 15 with my first band (back in the day) been in alot of bands, wrote alot of songs, recorded a bunch.
Now i get together with some local musicans and just jam ,we usually just start a groove and improvise.Or play covers and give it our own twist.

Great posts so far, alot of talented people here, and a great list of influences.
Lets keep it going.
