I was checking out the Right Here Right Now dvd last night from Van Halen's 1991-92 tour. Michael Anthony played a black SR4 for all normally tuned songs, a white SR4 for anything with the E string tuned down to D, and a gorgeous candy red SR5 for a few other tunes. What a tone!
I have the previous VH dvd, Live Without A Net and it may be more than one factor, but Anthony's bass sound is godawful and completely lost in the mix on that recording. He seems to only be playing a couple of Aria Pro basses on that show as well as the Jack Daniels bass.
Going back to the other dvd, boy did they ever get a sweet bass sound on that recording. Its really a fun show to revisit and there's lots of EBMM eye and ear candy! Don't know if Anthony still plays EBMM's or has has gone back exclusively to his signature Yamaha. Nothing against Yamaha's (I still have one) but that DVD is such a great example of the Stingray sound in action.
