I was checking out the Right Here Right Now dvd last night from Van Halen's 1991-92 tour. Michael Anthony played a black SR4 for all normally tuned songs, a white SR4 for anything with the E string tuned down to D, and a gorgeous candy red SR5 for a few other tunes. What a tone!

I have the previous VH dvd, Live Without A Net and it may be more than one factor, but Anthony's bass sound is godawful and completely lost in the mix on that recording. He seems to only be playing a couple of Aria Pro basses on that show as well as the Jack Daniels bass.

Going back to the other dvd, boy did they ever get a sweet bass sound on that recording. Its really a fun show to revisit and there's lots of EBMM eye and ear candy! Don't know if Anthony still plays EBMM's or has has gone back exclusively to his signature Yamaha. Nothing against Yamaha's (I still have one) but that DVD is such a great example of the Stingray sound in action.

There was a guy watching that dvd next to me on the bus a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know which one it was, and couldn't hear it, but I definitely saw that black SR.

Michael Anthony must have been using the SRs when Eddie was using the MM EVHs. I'll have to track that one down and watch it in its entirety.

My God yes I totally agree with Michael Anthonys Stongray Tone on the Right Here Right Nowm and Balance DVDs. How does Michael Anthony get such a fat punchy stingray tone on those DVDs. I mean my Stingray doenst seem to be that full in the low end. His Stingray is so Fat and Punchy and focused with massive depth yet with ample treble on top when needed. Is it just my bedroom making my Stingray sound a bit thin in the low end? Will the low end on a stingray open up in a Bar or Large outdoor concert? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks Sincerely Growler571

Amps have tone controls too. So do mixing desks for creating dvd soundtracks. Compressors are helpful also. Mics on amps also.

Its often the player though imho...

I actually bought the DVD because of this thread and it arrived.

It has multi-band compression to the tilt, and I have very serious concerns about "possible" overdubbing of a number of elements. A large number of elements. Quite honestly to me extended passages there sound like a precision bass in a studio.

Keep in mind this was originally a live album, not a video release. And you wouldn't want the audio change a lot when releasing the video, right?

I saw the Sterling with 2tek bridge at the Hollywood guitar Center when I was there a few years ago. Wish it would have had a sale tag on it. JOSH

It irks me how great precisions are still after all of the amazing innovations over the years. U could be right and in fact eddie might have overdubbed with a fender precision since he was later outspoken and very unduly derogatory about anthony's playing and apparently redid it himself in studio tracks sometimes.

But i'm not an expert and this is 3rd hand info so ymmv

Yeah. I didn't want to say in my original message because it was just a thought. But even before you mentioned it I was thinking "yeah it's probably Eddie in the studio with a Precision". And I didn't know Eddie actually spoke out against Michael.

And it doesn't have to be Eddie. A lot of popular bands' recordings have session players for the instruments, even without asking or informing the player. Just changed your mind later and needed a new bass part, when the band was gone. Zapp. Easy.

But yea... quite possible. I CAN get that tone from my musicman basses at times though...
