Well, when I am at a music store I don't feel like getting engaged in a cutting heads duel with the other people shredding away so a long time ago, I started playing tv show theme songs. I always manage to get some strange looks and most of them allow me to stretch out while still having a laugh.

I usually run chromatic stuff until I'm warmed up.

Or else, I end up playing Boston's "More than a feeling" to test the tuning of the open chords.

If tuned to drop-D, I end up playing "Pleadies" by King's X, or "Everywhere I Go I see you there" or whatever that song title is by the same band.

I don't normally play covers much anymore, when l pick up my guitar, l might play a Toto or King's X tune, most of the time l play originals.

I just play whatever the hell comes through my fingers. I really dont think much at first when I pick up the guitar, about WHAT to play. I just think about having good tone and good feel...basically just improv over whatever is running through my soul at that point or throughout the days happenings. After that I start playing some Morse, and that's about it. I need to learn more songs dammit!!!! hahaha
