Hi guys,
I'm a guitarist who just got a 4 strings stingray for recording purposes so I don't know basic things like that. I checked youtube videos and some guys cut the strings 2 post after the one that's gonna receive the string, some at the third.
Where do you guys cut it?
Thanks.

I don't think there's a precise answer. Enough to keep the string from slipping at least. Too much will work, but is sloppy.

You want at least a few turns around the post, but not so much that you're forced to overlap.

When I change the strings on my bass I use the width of my four fingers as an impromptu measuring tool.

Thanks for your answer. This how my strings are right now but I'm about to change them:

I cut them 2 posts past the post where the string was going, that is more than 4 fingers but with that lengh I barely have one turn around the post.
Does it look sufficient?

I'm being really careful with that cause with the current strings I have a terrible buzz so I wanna make sure I'm doing things right. This is the thread where I posted a recording of that aweful rattling that seems to be coming from the strings themselves:

I get a server error when trying to play the clip.

You must have really, really tiny fingers.

I'd go with a little bit more around the posts. Your E string is about at the limit... any less and it looks like it could slip.

Also, when bending the end of the string to fit down into the post I only bend an inch or so.

Cut 'em off longer than that... maybe another inch?

That is utterly false.

What you are encouraged to do is call Customer Service BEFORE posting your tale of woe about your bass. Give the company an opportunity to do their job and support you.

Here's the deal: This is a company-sponsored forum. You are allowed to post here because EBMM is good enough to provide, and pay for, this forum. Think of it as if it were their house. You are a guest here and you should act as a good guest would.

Would you go into someone's house and start complaining about the decor, the temperature, or what's in the fridge? No. You'd be gracious and polite. That's what we do here.

Ok I misunderstood the purpose of the forum then.
I thought it was a good place to ask to other users and maybe some had the same problem. I didn't think about contacting the customer service because I didn't think they would really help.
I did afterwards and ernie ball U.S. told me to contact the distributor in france who gave me the adress of the worst guitar tech in my region...
Thanks for taking the time to help me sir.:D

Stuff like this isn't really a "problem." We users are happy to help with stuff like this.

(Though we would advise you to replace those Brand X strings with some real Ernie Ball Slinkys... ;) )

What isn't cool is jumping on here with actual instrument issues before trying to go through channels.

I just changed my strings yesterday (back to regular Slinky Hybrids, from the coated ones). I normally cut the string about the length of 2 and a half posts past the post receiving the string.

There's lots of info in other threads - and in the FAQ section of this forum regarding set-up and fret buzz.

Here's an idea. Take one string off, measure the new string against the string you just took off and cut the new string to the same size. I'm not saying it's the right or perfect thing to do but it will look at neat as the one you took off, if that one was done properly.
