So, if your as-new honeyburst 2003 Stingray 5 fretless took a tumble off of a stage and the clear coat got all messed up like mine did, to whom would you send it for refinishing?

I don't play in a punk band and I don't want a "road worn" look. I have babied this thing for years and it looked virtually unplayed until last night. Yes, I'm a bit bummed... but it was my fault as much as anyone's, and I'm willing to spend some money to get her back to as new-condition.

Any advice?

I think spudmurphy posted a miracle cure on the guitar side.

For me guitar finish or refinish = Pat Wilkins

Welcome to Pat Wilkins™ Custom Guitars & Finishes

+1.

He just gave me a really good quote to have another one of my basses repainted. His prices seemed very good considering he is going to have the bass shipped to him, he then has to tear it down, prep it, paint it and then re assemble it and ship it back to me. On another website, there are a lot of people that highly recommended him due to his quality of work.

My vote = Marty Bell - excellent work, quick turnaround, better prices than Wilkins. He did a re-fin on my SUB5 - in my photo album - silver flake - nice!

I'm the same way about finishes and keeping my stuff nice. I sent my Stingray body to Marty and he did some super glue finish repairs and only charged me around $30 for 3 dings. I have no idea how bad your damage is, but it may not require a complete re-fin. You could probably send some pix to him and he could give you an idea what you're in for. He's in San Diego. All you do is send the body and pay him when it's ready - he'll send you a pic when it's done. Good luck!

Dolan does great nitro finishes in any color you want. He refinished a Stingray for me a few years ago in metallic silver and it was flawless....

Thanks for all of the advice y'all. I'm going to send the body to Marty Bell... he'll let me know what my options are (repair, refinish clear coat or complete refinish). All of these guys seem to do stellar work... Marty's just got the best turnaround time. It's high season for gigging here in New England and I really don't want to give the bass up for two months or more!

If he needs to do a complete refinish, I'll just have to figure out what color to choose. Hmmm... Autumn Redburst? Copperhead Bronze? Tony Levin Peach?

Ha ! I have been in contact with Basement. I wish I had seen this post first.
This stuff is good, but really only suitable for scratches.

My bass player dropped his handbuilt fretless bassthe other week - over 25 years old and it's developed a crack running the length of the back of the neck. :(

Gonna try and convert him to a fretless MM.
