Hello. i just joined the forum. looks cool here. i just started playing bass 4 months ago. ive been playing guitar for over 10 years though. i have been a jazz bass fan forever. i have been through 3 so far since i started playing bass. 2 passive and one active. i love the feel of them but couldnt quite get the bite i wanted from them. then my friend brought over his stingray. it was heaven!!!! i gotta have one!! but the neck felt a bit big... i might be able to get used to it but im afraid to spend that much $$$$ and then not like the neck. i read that the sterlings have a more "jazz bass" like neck, but i need to have that stingray sound. will i still be able to get that sound if i buy a sterling? please help me decide which one to get.
thanks so much!!!

...thanks for your reply, but will i be able to get the signature stingray tone with a sterling? i know the stingray has the tone i want, but i have no way of being able to play a sterling before i buy one.

then you have a dilema. the stingray ofcourse was the first of the two. it has a primere sound. the sterling is lighter and has a little difference. you can change the pickup setting with the sterling, but i suggest that you try it before you play it. you never know unless you play it.

it the only thing that you dont like on the stingray is the neck, im pretty sure that you could get used to it but i suggest that you wait for a sterling to try out before you purchase.

i hope that helped

... I think im just gonna get a stingray. i already know for sure that its the sound i want. tone is so important to me that comfort can come second. if i absolutly cannot get used to it down the road, i will try a sterling.

blue eyed mule- thanks for the suggestion, but i heard that the subs are junk. (i like the name though, the band im playing with is called 'sonic mule' )

im pretty sure you will get used to the neck. trust me it is an extrodinary bass, having one myself. go for it.

i wouldnt go for the sub though. i would go ahead and just buy the cream of the crop.

thats what im thinking. thanks fifthorange!
maybe i will post a review....
but im sure a stingray through an svt 4 pro and ampeg 810 is gonna be good.
i also have a gallien krueger 1000rb head. i cant decied which one i like better. i like the 4 pro for the power but the 1000rb is so tight and punchy and simple to operate! im trying to sell the 1000rb on ebay right now but im starting to think about ending the sale early. i really like that head. i wonder which will sound better with the stingray...
what do you guys think, gallien krueger or svt 4 pro?

The Sterling has the ability to produce the stock parallel Stingray sound. The bass was designed to be more versatile than the Stingray but still deliver that famous midrange punch. The 3 way toggle in the back position(closest to the bridge) will give you the parallel mode. This combination with the narrower neck could be the perfect match for you.

"i love the feel of them but couldnt quite get the bite i wanted from them."

From a fellow Jazz bass fan: the Sterling does a mighty good Stingray tone, and it WILL give you some aggressive tones. The neck on Sterlings is much closer to the feel of the Jazz, so, as Derek says, you owe it to yourself to try a Sterling. It might be just what you're looking for.

HOWEVER....a dual humbucker Bongo four string is also one hell of an aggressive bass, and the neck profile seems to me to be in between a Sterling and a Stingray.

Yeah, it's exotic and some people don't care for the design, but it's the best bass EB has ever built. Plus you can get the dual humbuckers or the one humbucker/one single coil configuration.....

...you should try one.

Which Ball?

I play Jazz basses and Stingrays almost exclusively
and I switch back and forth with no problems. Maybe
it will be the same for you. The Ray neck is very ergonomic,
not at all chunky like a P-bass. I think over a short
period of time, you will find that it's quite comfy.

As for a Sub, I bought one and I enjoy it quite a bit
BUT, you don't want this to be your only MM.
If you can afford a Ray, get one of these first and maybe
a Sub later on down the road to slap around.

Excellent choice, Mr Lump. Details? New? Used? Did you order it? Where did you get it from?

We're nasty little gossips and we must know.

used on ebay... mint condition though. i way overpaid on it for used but it was worth it to me. its the color i wanted and i saved over 300 off of the new price. and buy it now is better than getting outbid by .25 at the end of auction by some sniper.

its coming with a black pearloid pickguard on it. ive already ordered a solid black replacement. before i even play it the new pickguard is going on it! i love the way they look stock! it just looks like an eclipse! anyone wanna buy the pearloid one when it comes?
