I would go for at least one Bongo and a Big Al SSS and maybe skip the SR 4 and the Sterling. You will get a lot of ground covered alone with this.

Then save up a bit for a gamechanger.
Did you watch the documentary? It got me...

Oh heck, need the Ray! One of my favourite basses of all time is a 3 band Ray. So I have to keep that one for sure. Not sure to add the extra H though....maybe I will....

Documentary is great. Reflex HH Gamechanger....YES!

Is one Big Al SSS is enough? I know I shouldnt be so greedy.

sorry about your landlord. As oli has said the HH ray is a very versatile bass. Far more so in my experience than the 3 band H good as that is. I use mine quite often and there are several switch positions which i use a lot when using that bass. Its quite easy to slap on as well. You should try one out. If it was me id probably get both rays and wait for the game changer in HSS form which would cover most other ground. All that said i wonder if the game changer will be offered in other basses later . . . . . . . Now an HH ray with one would be something else! Best of luck anyway. You could also look out for good used ones especially the 3 band H ray.

Oh c'mon ... can any EBMM bass be a wrong choice:p;)

ATB/PL:)
Piezostroking = moresensuality:) than kicking, picking, punching or slapping:)

Eventually Id like a Bongo with piezo....but thats probably a fair way off.

Ok, looking at the landlord/moving scenario, id be much safer to put one of my orders on hold and upgrade the Ray H to HH...then Id have spare money for my move....and I can order something else perhaps in late Summer 2011.

I need to perhaps toss a coin!

Sterling 5 HS - Looks stunning, has the ceramic/series sound that I dont currently have.

Big Al 4 or 5 SSS - I think Id rather have the 5, but Id like a 4 as well damn it.

One of those unfortunately has to be put on hold :(

Saying that, I have so much coming, I should count myself as very lucky...so I just need to decide which I want more.

If it was me, I'd get the Big Al 5 SSS because I like 5 strings.

Can't play them, but can't play 4, 6 or any other combination either.

Still, I like 5's,

Given all you said above, I'd stop the Big Al 4 SSS regardless of what other changes you make to your orders. You can always get one later on when you have your 5 SSS and think you really need a 4 as well.

I think youve hit the nail on the head. It also means I can make the Ray 3 EQ a HH, and still have a 2 band H for those moments I want simplicity.

I can always re-order a 4 Big Al later in the year. The Big Al 5 SSS and Sterling 5 HS quotes were probably the best prices im going to see in a long time due to UK VAT rising etc, so Ill stick with them.

Update. I may just have all of them. In the long run it will cost me a fair whack more in the UK to re-order any of these later down the line.

The VAT and price rises in the UK means some products have upto 10% added to them over the past week or more, (not criticising EBMM or S&T by the way, its out of their control).

So, all in all, if I cancel one, I wont be able to get that deal again. Might be best to stick to my guns.

Thanks for the input chaps. Ill update again once I make a 100% decision.

Here's a vote for the Big Al 4SSS over the Sterling 5HS if you decide to put one on hold. If it were me I'd probably put flats on the 4SSS and rounds on the 5SSS, that difference to me is worth more than the ceramic/series thing.

About the the 3-band SR4 being an H or HH, I wouldn't worry at all about slapping on the HH - theres space aplenty for that. An HH really is an H + lots more, love mine. That said, to me the Stingray 4H is THE bass, and should I have to I'd part with my HH before wither one of my H's.

Tough decision. :)

Oil's got some real funky fingers so do check out the clips!

But yeah I would not go for the same bass in a 4 and a 5 version. As someone said if one was a H then it would make more sence. Plus you should check the reflex if you get a chance they really are outstanding

Reflex is next on the list in HH for late 2011. Once this batch are through, no basses for a LONG time...so earliest is late 2011.

I agree having a 4 and a 5 is a little daft, but I find I approach them both differently, and the Big Al is my favourite new bass design in years. You know all those fellas with lots of Bongos? Well thats me but with the Big Al. I just had to have it as soon as I saw the pics, plus the passive option...that really works it for me.

I use 4s in rock bands normally with a mixture of pick and fingers, and my 5s are for funk, noodling at home, and the more 'experimental' side of my playing. They feel really different to me, but in a good way. I like going between them, but im 70% a 4 banger player.

I think the best bet is to TRY and keep all three on order. Ill see what happens. Losing the Sterling 5 HS is going to be a shame.

Bloomin heck, now Im eyeing up a Reflex 4 HH. I always wanted the Anniversary bass, but I never got the cash together in time. I may be swapping the order around a little....we shall see.

Ok idea of Reflex 5 HH is on hold until I hear a Gamechanger. Still on the Big Al 4 SSS vs Sterling 5 HS....heck. Never thought it would be this hard!

Sounds to me like you need your local MM dealer to get S and T to send some basses on appro - and you have a try out of the SR4HH, SR4 etc etc - or a trip to London to try some in Denmark St (but phone to see what they have before you go).

I still think you should buy a nice SR4H used (eg on Ebay) - a nice natural or sunburst 3 band Ray is surely a must for every bass player (I know......I don't have one - this is exactly how I'll be getting one though)

Is owning two Big Al SSS basses (one in 4 and one in 5) more attractive, or a Big Al 5 SSS plus a Sterling 5 HS?

Weird question, I know. I apologise!

Thanks
Not weird at all I have sometimes 30 or 40 same combinations in different colors, so a 4 & a 5 in the same wouldn't bother me.

Hi guys/gals

It is with a lot of regret that I am definitely having to take one out of the equation.

My circs have changed a lot, and the job I am in temporarily may not last as long as I hoped :(

In addition, I have rejoined my old band who are now touring heavily, and I need some funds for this.

Massive shame, but I am VERY lucky to be able to have 2 out of the 3.

So, the Ray will be upgraded to a HH to give me some variation, and one of these will be unfortunately cancelled:

Big Al 4 SSS
Big Al 5 SSS
Sterling 5 HS

As I really want one of each, its a case of choosing whether to cancel the 4 string Big Al or 5 string. I dont know which one id use more, but Im guessing as its versatility is in the 5er. Hmmm!

I have to agree, I think having a 4 string and a 5 string version exactly the same is probably not necessary, as adding a Sterling 5 mixes things up a little.

Ill be making a decision by Sunday. When my circs change again, I will be getting a Reflex.

Decision made and finances coping fine with incoming balls! Still got three coming, which is pretty damn amazing.

I love 5ers, but my heart is with 4 string basses 70% of the time, so Im sticking with the Big Al as a 4.

PS - You will be happy to hear the 3EQ Ray 4 is being upgraded to an order for a HH instead....more of a wait, but more tone :)
