Ok, so now that I see that the Dargie Delight window will be open one last time, I'm interested in getting a Bongo as the "house bass" for all of our shows. So this will be used by students, teachers, visiting artists - whomever. I will use it for teaching during its days off. :) But the DD seems like an awfully cool bass to have out there all the time.

So, I was talking to Derek about ordering one and realized I'm clueless when it comes to basses. I'm pretty set on getting a 5-string Bongo, but am curious what you folks would recommend for pickup configuration and why? This will be used for everything from country to metal, so versatility is the key here. Any tips or personal recommendations from the Bongo crowd? :)

Bongo 5H - BP loves the single H (as do a bunch of us), it is simple, and sounds great. The HH and HS have their place (Dargin loves his HH) but they just don't have the bite of an H!!! My $.02

My humble $0.02:

Since this will be used by a bunch of different people with different levels of understanding and skill, keep it simple.

H.

I'm an inveterate tweaker, so for myself I went full-boat...HHp. And if I were to get another Bongo it'd have a piezo in it for sure. But that's just me.

As BP has said, with the H it's dead easy to get a great tone.

How about the rest of you?

Yep--a no brainer. A 5H Bongo is the way to go if it's going to be used by multiple people. the 4 band is great, but if it needs to be used on a regular basis by people who aren't familiar with the setup is simply too much to ask of a n00b.

Just tell them to try and check out the other versions that are available before they buy one. Because you know they are going to buy one.

Get one! Join Pete and I in the 5H DD club!

I have lots of love for the Bongo 5 H. It gets it all done on a wide variety of covers for me. Including country and blues. It is point and shoot simple. It would be just right for a class student or the most advanced pro.

imho of course

Thanks folks! The 5H does sound like it would be right for the job. I would really like to go for the DD, but I'm also keen on the Desert Gold - I just like bright, shiny things! :D Decisions, decisions...
