I've been a rabid DT fan since 1992, and all their stuff and related projects are great, but Scenes from a Memory is a musical masterpiece, a notch above the already great albums, and has my favorite JP playing, writing and tone.

hey mate,

DT music changes a bit (or sometimes a lot) from album to album but to me the "must have" albums are 'Images & words' , 'Awake' and 'Scenes from a memory'

Agreed!!! Awake is possibly my favorite DT album.

That illustrates nicely how varied DT's music is, and how much personal styles vary. I must admit that I like Awake the least, in large part due to the vocals. In fact, it was Awake that caused me to stop listening to DT for a few years in the mid 90s. I LOVED Images and Words, and Awake was just too different for me at the time. I got back into them when Scenes came out. I should add that I have since developed an appreciation for Awake - many of the tunes/melodies really stick with you. Now I'd have a real hard time picking a favorite album as I like each one for different reasons.

Very well put Mike. I definately see what turns you off about the vocals on Awake. I do however LOVE JP's work on the entire album, especially the solo on Voices. It really shows how much feal & emotion he can conjure as well as ripping your face off. Definately one of the greatest players in rock music.

Absolutely... but Portnoy's snaredrum sounds crappy on the album. I like the Train of Thought snare sound better. :)

I must agree on the Liquid Tension as well. Overall both albums are just brilliant musically and technically concerning that both of them were done within a WEEK!!! Like Mike R. said, Acid Rain and Paradigm Shift are awesome, but Universal Mind and Kindred Spirits are also amazing. 3 Minute Warning is a straight up half hour JAM that they did and put it on the record AS IS. Every time I listen to that jam I hear something new and inspiring and weird too.
