The single coil tones of the Silo Special are also right up your street. I seem to remember BP saying the pickups for the Silo Special were deliberately chosen to be more 'vintage'. Even on the HSS models, the humbucker is a classic vintage style choice. If you don't mind HSS don't rule out the Luke either - great single coil clean tones and incredibly versatile. But yes, the Silo Special and the Albert Lee are your most 'vintage strat' choices.

While the Luke sounds great, I wouldn't put the EMG sound in the "vintage" category. Jmho.

I would say, an AL SSS is great but not 100% like a Strat. A Strat has a bit more bottom end/is a bit more bassy in my opinion....
My point of view is to use a Strat if you want a Strat tone. As said AL is a bit different, but delivers absolut first class Single Coil sounds - I use an AL! :D

Not after 100% vintage strat - but close enough is good for me. A bit different is good! I'm slowly turning into a EBMM fanboi... this all started when I found the Petrucci.

True, but think of Gilmour or Hendrix and the Luke does it all beautifully. And, as Dean is showing, it has the added bonus of being a scorching metal guitar.

But if you want all the 60 cycle hum, you'll have to pull the silent circuit battery. :)

Let's turn this into a feature - AND if you want mains hum, you just have to pull the battery! :D

another check for the AL or Silo Special...

The Silhouette also can get some great strat tones but the Special is a better mold... :)

I'd say if you want a strat sound, buy a strat. EBs sound like EBs, which is a good. That's why I at EB guitars. Single coils have a similar sound but can still sound very different. Definitely check out the guitars mentioned above. They are an amazing alternative to a strat.

SOOO true... over the years I've tried to get guitars to sound like something else... like put a bucker in a strat and expect it to sound like a Paul... or split a bucker to get that strat sound...

Sorry to Digress...

But any of the afformentioned guitars will give you different flavors but will give you a good tone. Check 'em out and keep up posted and let us know what worked out best for you.

I've migrated to Silhouette Specials from strats and I'm happy with the results.

I usually swap the pups immediately to Dimarzio Areas in my personalized configurations, but stock pickups sound pretty close to that "vintage" strat tone.

Let's keep in mind that not all strats sound like a strat. That idealized sound we have in our heads isn't the same for everyone.
