Greetings from the bass side of the forum!

I've decided I need a new guitar in the slightly distant future. I currently have an OLP Petrucci, but want to upgrade to something better. I'm not a big modder, so that's out of the question.

My problem is that I don't know which one to choose.

Being a bassist, I don't really have any real preferances for guitar necks, trems and stuff like that.

I really only need one guitar, so it has to be versatile.

I kinda have a soft spot for the Y2D. It also helps that Morse plays every genre known to mankind, so it's certainly versatile.

I don't have an absolute need for a trem, but it would be nice to have the option, so maybe a Silo?

Or perhaps one of the SBMM Silo-models, they're cheaper... It's not like I can justify a $1500 guitar anyway...

Then again, I've watched videos with the SBMM Ax-models, and they sounded awesome, and quite versatile, so maybe one of those?

Or maybe I should save up and wait, and get a Reflex with the series/parallell switch and the contoured body...

Or a piezo Petrucci...

Or...

And it goes on. I need help.

To give you something to work with, when I play guitar I usually play stuff like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, CCR, Metallica, Clapton, Cream, Foo Fighters, Toto, Steely Dan, etc.

So, basicly rock, metal, fusion, and also some blues.

Sorry, but I can't try any of them before I purchase. My local store had a EBMM JP 2-3 years ago, and that's about it. They won't take in anything either, without me committing to buying it.

So, ehm, good luck. Please feel free to ask for any additional info that might be significant.

Thanks in advance.

Your listed stuff you play is very similar to what I play.....which is to say....all over the map. Does your OLP JP do what you need for the styles you play? If so, get a JP. Pretty low risk there. Don't want to spend quite so much.....get the SBMM JP. I've played both and the JP by SBMM is my favorite.....and I'm not even a big fan of that guitar (pickup switch is in my way).

I do like silos and the SBMM silo was also very nice. I've gotta think an SBMM Silo 30 (silo spec) is also going to play nicely.

For some of the acoustic Clapton, Metallica (nothing else matters) going to heavier stuff....Metallica solo (nothing else matters), the piezo would be awesome.

I don't know....but I've convinced myself that you want a JP....

For such a wide range of genres, I would choose something like a Reflex/25th or Morse. A JP with Piezo would be good, too, but not as versatile IMO.

All of them. GET ALL OF THEM.

But, I'd personally go for the Petrucci, mainly because I'd use the Piezo quite a lot. Though yes, the Morse is very versatile, but if you have the right sort of equipment, anything can be for the most part.

I'd say Petrucci though. They're comfy, sounds great, and again I adore the piezo.

A 25th/Reflex if I could afford one.

An SBMM is a good option as I once owned an AX40 and I was thoroughly impressed with it.

You can't go wrong with a Silo H-S-H.

That's what I'm leaning towards at the moment. What's the major differences between the Silhouette and the Y2D's? Body contour and bridge?

Does your OLP JP do what you need for the styles you play? If so, get a JP. Pretty low risk there. Don't want to spend quite so much.....get the SBMM JP.

My guitar amp is a Roland Micro cube, where basicly every guitar sounds the same (to me at least)... :p Gotta get something else there too.

But actually, it kinda does... Plus, the SBMM Stealth JP50 looks awesome.

For such a wide range of genres, I would choose something like a Reflex/25th or Morse. A JP with Piezo would be good, too, but not as versatile IMO.

This is why I'm leaning towards a Silo or Morse. I can't afford (read: justify getting) a 25th, and probably not a piezo JP either.

why dont you get a y2d with the floyd rose?

To bassists who are used to hardtail bridges, a Floyd Rose looks mighty intimidating... :p

All of them. GET ALL OF THEM.

I would, if I won the lottery... :D

Though yes, the Morse is very versatile, but if you have the right sort of equipment, anything can be for the most part.

As for my other equipment, I'm probably gonna upgrade my amp to some kind of 50W, looking at Vox VT's ATM. I think my Micro Cube has 2W. I don't know how versatile that end of the chain is gonna be.

An SBMM is a good option as I once owned an AX40 and I was thoroughly impressed with it.

This is good news.

The more I think about it, the more I wanna get two...:p

Perhaps an EBMM Silo HSH, white w/tort, rosewood fretboard, and a SBMM JP50 Stealth? :D

I'll throw an Albert Lee into the pot - I play stuff like Foo Fighters, Killers, Clapton, CSNY,Bowie, Cream, blues quite a wide range really- the Albert handles them all. In a recent thread a guitarist at a gig was very complimentary about my tone with the AL - how about a HH Al?

Actually, now that an AL is possibly in the choosing, I'd say go for that. :p

Oh and, go win the lottery and just get all of them. That will make things easier.

Agreed, just rob a bank or something and get everything ever lol.

I just got back from my local GC and I must say that an ASS would be a perfect choice for all styles of music. They had a Vintage Sunburst, Rosewood, BFR, ASS and it was amazing! Get one with the peizo and you would be set to do whatever.

Do they allow guitars in prison?

[Insert random "Jailhouse Rock"-joke here]

I don't know how to break it to you guys, but I think I'm still leaning towards a Silo, a Morse or something SBMM... :p

:D

But I assure you, if I win the lottery, I'll get one...

You might like the AL neck since you're a bass player. It's not huge but it isn't tiny either. It's very comfortable and substantial without being overly substantial. The HH AL is very versatile. Positions 2 and 4 on the 5-way switch give you split-coil sounds in addition to the three humbucker sound available. It's a jack-of-all-trades.

Why not get a SBMM Silo and save for another one? maybe a SBMM JP. The Silo is probably the most overlooked EB guitar in this forum, but I can assure you it's absolutely amazing and not inferior to any of the other models. It is probably the most versatile of them all, with the right amp it can go from country and jazz to prog and heavy metal, without compromising on any end. It's a very middy guitar which makes it hard to scoop sometimes, and it's not for anyone, but on the other hand it's very vocal sounding, great for leads and classic rhythms.

I have two silos and they fill what used to be accomplished my 13 Strattys... so to say they are very versatile is very accurate. I scored my first taste of EBMM by buying a 20th Anniversary from Fing... and was hooked- playability and versatility was amazing. So i started selling off my herd to fund a second HSH Silo which filled in the rest... i have played both through high gain amps and have received phenomenal results and dialed them back to get very smooth jazz tones. I have even dialed in one of my practice amps and my silo sound very country chicken pickin' sweet crisp single notes. very pure....

I would suggest giving a Silo a run through and seeing what fits your needs and hands the best. I went with the stattys for years because its what was played by my friends and those i looked up to (musically) never really cared for them but it's what was there... and once i got my hands on an EBMM that was it for me... so without any doubt i know whatever EBMM you go with you will not be disappointed at all...
