I'm wanting to cover some Rush tunes, and I want a new bass as well. I don't care for R!cs, or I could get a Geddy Sig bass, but Music Man basses are (IMO) far superior to the F-brand.

So, what MM bass do you recommend to cop some Rush tones. FWIW, I tend to gravitate towards Geddy's R!c sound.

I prefer the smaller Music Man bass necks, so I'm thinking Big AL, but I haven't been able to put my hands on one yet.

Please let me know what you think...

Bongo HS- tilt the balance a little to the single coil, raise the upper mids a little, adjust treble for clank. Gotta have rounds on too. It will get you close, dig in with your fingernails a little too.

I have played Rush on both a Sterling and 2-bnad Stingray live. In my opinion both can do the job, just depends mainly on your attack and your hand position in my opinion.

I can't think of any bass in the MM line-up that will prevent you from playing Geddy's lines.

I have done a few Rush covers including YYZ and La Villa Strangiato with my StingRay HH using the bridge pick-up. It can produce a very Geddy like sound.

I'm seeing them on Sept 3 at PNC Bank Arts Center!

Stingray 4HH on selector position 2 (away from the bridge) gets a sound very reminiscent of a Fender Jazz, but with the MM focus to it. It's very versatile so will probably cover everything you need ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone! :)

I'm surprised by the # of Bongo suggestions. I used to own a Bongo 4HH. It was super versatile, but It probably wouldn't have been the first bass I grabbed to cover Rush.

I've realized that I'm going to have to try a Big AL before I can make a final decision, but the previous posts have helped.
