Okay, I'm a new player here and I've been playing with a variety of different string lately. I'm having a hard time figuring out the effect they are having though. Depending on what strings i'm using sometimes I get buzzing. Really noticible if I tune down. Right now I am using something like 9-42 these buzz like crazy and I don't want to raise the string height because it is difficult for me to play then. Am I going to see a difference if I switch to a thicker set of string. Or rather, what I want are strings that won't vibrate as much. If I'm making any sense. Make the same tone but have to move so far to make it. I'm totally clueless here. Thanks.

I think your just going to raise the string height and practice a bit more. You could try lighter sets but if you still encounter fret buzz, you have to raise the strings.

Generally, the rule of thumb is you need to go to the next heavier gauge string for every half step you tune down.

If you're getting string buzzing while tuned to pitch, you probably need a set up. It could be that the strings are set too close to the fret board, or the truss rod may need to be adjusted. If you change the gauge of the string, then the neck will probably need to be re-setup, as the tension on the neck will change (thereby raising or lowering the strings).
