I've got a question.

How do flats and nickels differ?

And would a lighter gauge have more power and punch?

Lighter gauge = more flexible, can bend notes easier

Heavier gauge = more rigid, stronger notes, more punch


... all generally speaking.

How bout flats and rounds?

Flats both feel and sound smoother. Less high frequency harmonics. Rounds have more high frequency overtones and sound more aggressive.

Flats give a real classic sound in many genres. Eg Both James Jamerson (Motown) and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) used flats. Can't get two more opposite genres there.

I like both so much, I have decided to get two basses so I can have one strung with flats and another with rounds.
