Saw my first one at a local music store years ago. A blonde one. Sounded great and was on sale, if I remembered correctly. Played it, and the rest is history. Have owned numerious ones on and off throughout the years. Pretty consistant quality and great tone. Nothing sounds quite like an EB bass.

Tim Foreman of Switchfoot...he played a trans gold / maple sterling for a few years and now he's endorsing Lakland (44-94 & hollowbody).

Got a non-EB bass here at the house; just too cool to pass up on.

Also on FedEx arrest today waiting for my FL A/E to show.

After that, it's two EBMM's I'm waiting on.

Louis Johnson and Gary Grainger (playing with Haakon Graf) passing me "SR4 disease", incurable... Even with the antidote (the SR itself) I still experience sudden cravings...

But the search for the vaccine has not been easy... Started with a 2000 with Piezo, but was disappointed: weighing a ton, baffled by the mids knobs (could not get it right in my ears), unvarnished and very thick neck (P-style).... BUT now I feel SOOOO much better with a 1989 Trans Red 2EQ, much lighter, bird's eye varnished neck, thinner... what a relief.....

I passed on a SR4 a couple of years ago, had never really played one. I stumbled onto the Pit last year and then found my way here. Decided to try the ray again, soon afterward the UPS fairy left one at my door.

I blame Jack for the Bongo that I ordered exactly 18 days ago, so thanks and dammit all at the same time.

18 days?

Are we there yet?

Hah!! This is the ultimate waiting game. You'll be ordering other EBMM basses just to pass the time!

Jack has kept me totally clueless on when my single H Bongo is gonna get here. It has actually worked. I often forget that I even ordered one. I'm gonna hate it if he suddenly tells me it is two weeks off (or some other inteval of time measurement). Then I'll be eyeing my calendar and sweatin' more.

I'm curious if other players have an experience seeing and/or hearing a Stingray, Sabre, or other that really got you jonesing for a Music Man bass of your own.

My story is a two - decade saga. When I was around 15 or 16, Louis Johnson released a Hot Licks instructional video where he played a natural/maple neck 'Ray. I already loved The Brothers Johnson and Louis' playing and sound really impressed me. I honestly couldn't find a Stingray in CT at the time to try or buy, so I moved on.

Sade came out with "Smooth Operator" later and I thought that stuff was the bomb, but still couldn't find a 'Ray anywhere. This was pre-EB times.

Your inspiring moments don't have to involve famous guys - who or what roped you in to the MM fold?

Hi,

You've hit on a couple of my influences, Louis Johnson and Paul S. Denman of Sade. But, I would also have to add Bernard Edwards of CHIC (my current avatar), and now Gary Grainger with John Scofield (check out the albums Blue Matter, Pick Hits Live, and Loud Jazz). :p :D

Oh! And by the way,

Volume Two of Louis Johnson's Star Licks video features him with his signature bass made for him by Kramer, however, towards the end, there is an awesome bass solo video clip of him using his 'Ray live while performing with Quincy Jones in Japan!!! That clip is my morning coffee!!!:p

Newby forumite here....how y'all?

Just got wind of this forum today from a fellow HCBF forumite....

Got my 'Ray 5'er about 5 months ago, coming off of a Carvin LB75, which I still have, keeping as a back-up bass.
Really like the 'Ray a lot, it gets all the tones I need to gig with.

I recently had the opportunity to tell the guy that influenced my decision to buy this 'Ray "Thanks!", and he was blown away....

There's a bar in Livermore, Ca. called the Pine Street Bar & Grill, and they've been holding weekly jams there for about forever. There was a guy named Ryan that played with the house band there for a couple of years, had a natural 'Ray 5, and one week I just dropped-in to see who was there and didn't have my Carvin in the car with me.
They asked me to go up and do a few, and Ryan's holding the 'Ray out to me with this ****-eating grin, so what would you do?
Yup. I played that bugger for about an hour. As I handed it back to him, I told him, "Well, I'm definitely going to own one of those someday!"
So, fast-forward a couple of years to last Thanksgiving Eve, at a bar in Livermore called Downtown Ollie's, where their annual Thanksgiving Blues jam is being hosted by a band called Black Cat Bone (which I'm now the bass player for)....I'm like the 2nd bass player up there, and get to enjoy a solid 45-minute set, playing my ass off with my 'Ray 5, having a bitchin' time....the next bass player up is Ryan, same natural 'Ray 5'er, still sounding great!
After he gets done, I meet up with him outside and tell him that he was the reason I'm playing what I am right now, and he was totally gracious and said he was glad he could do somwebody some good like that.
An all-around good experience.

No one...

Really... No one at all...

I had been casually hunting down the perfect bass and decided to give EBMM a try.

Knew I found perfection as soon as I held a Sterling!

(That's a Sterling, not the Sterling! :p )

Hey timmerz, welcome to EBF! I know Pine Street very well...gigged there a few times when I first got started up here. From what I hear, their jam nights are still some of the best of the Bay Area!

Is Larry Berman still playing drums at the jams? I'm waay overdue to head out there for a sit-in.

Anyway, enjoy the forum!

Not 100% sure about this, but I'm bettin' that those of us waiting on basses/guitars will hear from Dargie first, then from either Jack and/or Steve when it leaves AZ.

I could be wrong, though. It's been documented...at least by my wife on a few occasions.

Tom.. Jack will tell you when it is on its way to you. The great thing about Jack, he doesn't tease about getting your bass. Busy as he is with everything, he treats your getting your bass like he is getting one of his own.

If that makes sense.

Mine ain't leavin' AZ. I'm gonna have to see if Steebo is up for dinner or somethin'. Atleast get to meet another of the forumites in person. If wishes were fishes, I'd have been servin' up sushi at the Open House.

Yeah, I have a feeling all the NAMM orders are gonna be done around the same time and somebody is gonna be bustin' at the seams to share with us.

And, no, as long as I've known you, you haven't been wrong, just misunderstood. ;)
