I use Bayou cables for instrument cables and speaker cables. He makes super nice stuff, and you get to make choices to get exactly what you want.
The problem I had with the Planet Waves is I feel like they have a negative effect on the jack. However, I keep one to use if I get a used bass with an intermittent jack. It seems to work pretty well until I get a chance to replace the jack.

I have a thing about the sound of music. Not the movie. The SOUND of music. I'm a Stereophile. You know, one of those guys that dotes over his stereo and spends money to upgrade components to get a realistic effect. Yes, I spent $125 just for a power cord (I won't go into it). You get the idea.
Well, this commitment to good sound is every bit as important with our bass equipment too. Every component is suspect for degrading the sound produced by your bass. Even your instrument and speaker cable.
Call me nutty. But I care about getting that sweet MM sound to my ears with no degradation of fidelity. The sound I want to hear is the exact sound that Ernie and Sterling (and others) worked so hard to achieve.

All joking aside I too do notice an improvement with high grade cables.
I have high end and basic EB cables.
Always take the Ernie Ball cables to play out.
Go ahead- step on it, spill beer on it, please... hold the barf....
Do we now need self-cleaning cables ?
OR
When the band is cranked up, and the audience can't tell B from C....what cable?
OR
Should we worry more about checking that loose jack every now & then what cable?
OR
I want real StingRay tone, for real EBMM factory tone,I'll use only EB cable

Via the evilBay, I got some cables from a guy named Sal. Custom built product, using quality parts, coming in a range of colors. They sound great and wrap easy.

And then it does not matter if the difference is explained, the "experts" are on repeat. Reminds me of people claiming acupuncture does not work at all. hey, it helps me!
Or like the never-ending discussion about break angles and after-the-nut string lengths: Even though we can understand that there cannot be a difference in string tension, you feel changes in the above parameters. Some claim to hear them too.
Having said that I can honestly say I like generic instrument cable as good as I like "high end" stuff. Except for some funny stuff (George L comes to mind) the sound differences are, to me, too small to be worth a lot of money. Reliability is my main focus.
Btw, I'm happy I'm not one of the guys doing cable testing
