Who Plays a Seven String?

I have recently become intrigued by 7 String Guitars. I have been told that it's not too hard to pick up.

Who plays a 7 String? Do you find it to be more versitile or do you enjoy it for the extended range?

I play a seven string when I need the seventh string. I wouldn't go seven full time, because I find the smaller neck more comfortable, but it's not too hard. Plus, my Ibanez seven string isn't that great compared to my JP6...need a JP7

Tell me more about when you "need the seventh string".

I will say this, the JP7 has the smallest (and most comfortable) neck when it comes to 7 string guitars. It wasn't that difficult of a transition from 6 to 7 strings for me but rather the transition in my head of "oh yeah I have the notes on the extra string". I played 7 string exclusively for almost 2 years and loved it. Right now I am switching between 6, 7, and 8 string, my only complaint with the 8 string is that its just not winning me over (the idea behind it is, the company that makes it IS NOT). But anyway back to your question. as far as comfort the jp7 is perfect and I really had no problem making the adjustment.

same here, but i did next step and snapped a JP7. still have my IBZ 7321 but love the JP7 way more.
but for "regular" hard rock songs i prefer the 6 stringers, it´s easier to play.
only play a 7 when needed.

OK, so let me ask again... When you guys say "when needed" do you mean for extended range or more chord choices (13ths and whatnot)?

I would say that most people use 7 strings for the extended range. There is something about going through a normal set of power chords, then suddenly dropping down to the B or C. It adds great dramatic effect and makes music feel more powerful, I think.

I'm not a "full time" 7 string player, but they get the most action out of all my guitars. I love drop tuning, but I don't want to sacrifice the range of a 6 string. 7 string was the answer. The 7's get the most action with my band since we play really heavy drop tuned stuff. The 6's get the most action at home because they are my writing and fiddling tools.

I started off with an Ibanez RG1527, which was a really nice guitar. As soon as I got my first BFR 7, that Ibby was out the door, though. I agree with Voo on the subject. The BFR JP7 is the most comfortable 7 string I've ever played, and the easiest to transition between 6 and 7 with.

i agree that I dont use it much often,
I only use it when I needed to play a song in a 7 string guitar,

though there was a time that I used it throughout the set,
its not that hard to adjust yourself through the extended range,.

When I first decided to get mine I mainly just wanted to experiment with the extended range even though it was a bit of a risk. I never intended to permanently make it my main guitar, but it simply is the best guitar I own at the moment so I naturally gravitate towards it. I would say that it would be a great guitar to add into your family being that I see you have a JP50 as well. The low B is quite fun

I guess I'm in the minority because I pretty much only play mine. I just fell in love with them, but I'm too attached to my JP6 (first MM) to let her go and fund another one. Unless I found a 7 in Desert Gold. Which I did. But it got sold

My first guitar ever was an Ibby RG7. *blush*

I was in a very young and adolescent "metal" phase and played 7 string mostly for the low/drop tuning stuff.

I had my 7 stringer but as I grew my taste in music matured, and I eventually had to face the truth for myself: I wasn't good enough for a 7 stringer and wasn't utilizing it for all its worth.

So I sold that for a LP, then my LP to the JP, then JP to the 25th, which I am happy to say my quest is over.

That was all 5 years ago, and I feel I'm ready to expand my range and incorporate that 7th string back into my arsenal.

My opinion is, if you feel you can give the 7th string love I say why not? Go for it. I will definitely be adding one in the future, and it will definitely be a JP.

I play a 7 string. JP7 that is...
In my case , i play it "when i need it" , meaning , when i need that low B, for a heavy feel.
Not so much for extensions like Hendog mentioned, i usually get them on higher strings so they ring out nicer.

as said before, only if it comes to some lower riffs and some more "evil" sounding guitarwork is desired.
i hate to play chunky E-string rhythms on a 7 string, the lower string let me loose my feeling for the chunky E-riffs. that´s how it is for me.

I bought a 7 strings (sorry not an EBMM ... but a cheaper one) for two main reasons :

• I wanted to try one
• I really like the Dark Eternal Night from Dream Theater

Now, I play my 7 strings mainly when I want to play a DT song played on 7 strings (the next one I want to play : the Shattered Fortress).
The 7 strings is not hard to play, the width of the neck is really not a problem.The only problem is that when you to play an E chord, you often play a B chord ...
