Indeed. Sometimes when learning something that only requires 6 strings on a 7 string things can get easily confused. If you start playing a 6 string solo you have to remind yourself to not start playing the extra string. You can also never hit the low string like you would to have to learn whatever it is your learning, but when you try to play it on a regular 6 string you start a string too high.
I used to use an Ibanez Universe, it was my main guitar for a couple of years. The 7 string neck was a little too wide for my hands, had to work harder for everything, so i went back to 6 string.
I would say use a 7string only when needed, like Petrucci does . But there's lots of guys who play 7 string all the time, and has great chops, like Rusty Cooley.

I always thought that 7 strings guitars are not comfortable to play because of the neck...
this weekend I had the chance to play a 7 string model - Manne guitar (Manne Guitars - 7 strings) - great guitar , love it ... (Voo , Manne makes custom guitars and they make 8 strings too)
I was surprised to see that it is not that hard as I thought, even I have small hands and I loved the heavy sound that you can get with that low B

I play a 7-string because:
- it has a bigger range, which, depending on the band situation and the players in Your band, is a very good thing to have
- I love the way bass chords sound with 7th string involved
- You can play everyting, even the downtuned things without needing to tune down, change string tensions etc. Basically You really have it all in this guitar - and if You don't need the 7-th, just play the rest
Drawbacks: The neck is wider - which to me (and to many other players as well) makes the 6-string a tiny bit more comfortable than the 7. This, and every now and again You think You are playing a usual G-major chord, while actually playing D )

I had a JP7 for awhile and it didn't take too long to get used to. I liked the fact that with some fret position adjustment, I could play some of my favorite Sabbath tunes that were in C# and some Queens of the Stone Age that were in C without having to keep retuning the guitar. After awhile though, I missed the simplicity of just playing 6 strings and went back to a JP6.

I play both 6- and 7-strings - I usually just pick whichever strikes my fancy on the day - and it's all just great fun. Different instruments inspire different playing and different songs. IMHO there's no need to overthink the 7-string, it's just one more string, not a new instrument!
