They can't always be shiny. This bass has obviously proven itself over the years and still has many years left. Admittedly a trip to the tech for a set up would do it the power of good. I wonder how many of us would have approached James Jamerson and told him his bass was a bit scruffy looking and that it was high time he changed his strings. Who would have told Jaco that his Jazz was looking knocked about and suggested a refin?

I like to buy new, or mint used basses. IMO, there is a difference in relicing a bass oneself overtime naturally through player wear and buying one pre-stressed (like the one in this auction) Buying a bass that someone else reliced is like buying someones elses memories.

I absolutely agree that it is best to put the wear on the bass yourself but that is not to say that this bass doesn't have years left in it. Whatever the reason for selling, this bass is still fully functional. It's just older. People buy and sell all the time as we see in these forums. Sometimes the basses are pristine, sometimes they aren't.

All true. Some people, however, really like pre-beat stuff (Fender's relic stuff for example). I have bought basses with wear before, but it was because I needed the bass and that was what I could afford. I bought in SPITE of the wear. What I don't get is people buying BECAUSE of the wear. Different strokes, though. Peace.

Hey Pete - We're jumping up and down on common ground. I also dislike the whole relic thing. For example, if I was buying a Fender Time Machine bass I would definitely buy the New Old Stock Version. It is just plain daft to build wear into a bass. I certainly wouldn't go out my way to buy a bass because of the wear. I would want the bass for what it was not because it showed signs of use. If it had signs of wear that is of secondary importance. By far the best way to do it is to buy your favourite EBMM bass and grow with it so that any wear is all yours.
