I bought two Stingrays in 1996 brand new from Mass St. Music in Lawrence, KS. They had just become a dealer and the singer from the band I played in (back then) mentioned they had a few in at Mass St. At the time, I was playing Ibanez Soundgears and was looking to move to a bass with a bigger body but hadn't been happy with any of the Fenders I had tried. I tried the MM and decided I needed to have it. Natural w/ rosewood. I took it to band practice and it ruled in the mix. I did almost take it back though b/c the pickups were a bit noisy to me! Soundgears actually have VERY nice active electronics and they are totally quiet. The sound and the feel of the MM ruled over the slightly noisy PUP. After gigging on my MM for awhile I decided it was time to have another Stingray because the Soundgear I had for a backup now just wouldn't seem to cut it for me.

So...back to Mass St. to purchase the black '96 that I still own. The natural was traded away for some recording equipment when my band broke up and I STILL regret that one.

Man... it took a while to pay those babies off too! I must have been dreaming that I actually had some money the year I made those purchases!

WOW you are old!!! :D :D I was born in 79. Last child of the 70's

My Grandmother bought her first pre-EB Ray in 1977 and she has been playing it five nights a week in her thrash reggae gospel band ever since.

She is 92 now and is savings her pension payments towards a Bongo which she plans to gig on tour next year.

A 92 year old grandmother who plays five nights a week in a thrash reggae gospel band ???? But I know a lady who must be in her eighties who plays upright bass in a seniors band and she carries her own gear.

ok...but she's 76 and it's strange to imagine a 76 year old woman playing a Sterling be it in a church group or whatever setting it may be.

Since '96. But my first one was stolen in 2000, so then I played a Warw*ck fretless Corvette and a MIA P-Bass. That lasted all of a year before I had to get back to the SR4 which I bought in '01 and I haven't looked back.
