So I am thinking of getting the neck on my Silo sealed, because I kinda like the feeling of a finished neck. I mean I love the smoothness of the oiled wood, but for some reason it feels more natural to me when it is finished. Plus I think it would help the consistency of going between the Silo and my neck through Ibnz ( yea yea yea, whatever). So how does it feel compared to the regular oiled neck, and is it worth it? Plus how long does it take for this process to be done. I'm kinda hoping Tommy can do this, because I dont want to send the geetar all the way to Cali. I dont trust any postal people. Tommy if you read this, what's up with this weekend and can you do that sealing neck thing???

Well the JP I just got from SteveLINY has the neck sealed according to him. It really doesn't feel any different than my non-neck sealed EBMM's.

Ditto. I bought Jon's Axis and it had the neck sealed. I had no idea until he told me- feels just like any other non-lacquered EBMM neck.

You'd seal the neck if you have real problems with stability. Otherwise, it wouldn't be doing anything more than what the oil+wax do.

Personally, I'm done with lacquered necks. I find the wood finish much faster, less sticky, more natural to play.

sounds like u want the neck refinned in poly like the older models. i think u are confusing the sealing procees that jon@ebmm does ........ w/ a refin ???? they feel completely different.

i don't have a paint booth......

I was thinking more along the lines of having it sealed the Jon way. I would like to retain the feel of the neck how it is now, it's just for the stability wise issue. I dont think the neck is unstable, but in my apartment it could very possibly start doing crazy things. My apartment does CRAZY things during extreme weather. For example during the hot summer it gets HOTTER in my apartment and more humid hen it is outside, and than during the winter it gets COLDER inside my house than outside. I keep the guitar in its case on the wooden deck floor under the bed. Every time I take it out it feels very cold, and I am very paranoid about things like this. This might be possibly why I am having those buzzing issues on my Silo, and unfortunalty I am not that great at doing set ups yet.

Yea I guess I am kinda really contradicting myself. Ummm, I am going with that second quote. The first quote was kind of a nonsense. I was thinking about the Ibnz finished neck, and how it felt, but the truth is I like the smoothness of the oiled neck. Therefore I would like to retain that kind of a feeling but have the neck sealed the EB way and not a laquered finish. Sometimes I feel like I am on drugs when I am at work, and the drugs are not good. Anyway I hope that cleared it up, or maybe I confused everyone even more  .

Yeah, I'm confused now ...

Ok, if you like the feel of the neck KEEP IT LIKE IT IS.

You can have the neck sealed, but it won't make a big difference in feel. And as Jon will tell you, there's no point doing it unless you really have a tough time keeping it set up. If the neck is stable you'll be wasting your $$$.

Hey yo,

"sealing" the neck is different than "finishing" the neck. Sealing the neck will not affect the feel of the Musicman "unfinished", oiled neck. Finishing the neck will make it feel like a sticky pool cue....hahahah

I had my JP done while it was back in SLO for a warranty issue. I love it and would consider doing the same for my others if it became necessary.

Beth, I love the analogy for the finished neck! :D I've always tried to think of a way to describe those "other" necks and you've hit the nail on the head. I really have a tough time playing any other guitars with the finished necks now.

I had my neck sealed from jon and it feels great, still smooth and what have you and I have not adjusted the neck at all, even with the climactic changes of NY -

Does the treatment stabilize the neck by "sealing" it from the environment, or does it actually strengthen the neck? I've read that you can add strength to a neck by diluting CA with acetone. Once it's thinned out, the mixture will seep into the neck and strengthen it.

Ok here is my take on the "Voodoo Sealing"

This started many years ago when in certain climatic zones with more open grained maple there was some shifting in the wood. Dudley showed on of our our past repair supervisors an old trick where you sealed the end grain of the neck with a concoction that included super glue. This was then taken to the whole neck.

The thought is that the super glue concoction would penetrate the wood and seal it. My opinion is that it wears off in a short time. I also think that if there was really a material difference it would be the benefit of sealing the end grain. Not one of my instruments is sealed. Never. If I thought for a second that sealing the neck with a superglue mixture had a long lasting positive effect on the stability then we would seal all necks.

If someone wants it done and feels that they have a better guitar after then go for it.
The last guy thought that it was the cure for the common cold, I thought of it as a baby aspirin/placebo.
