I am a guitarist, and woukd normally say the Guitarist is smarter due to more complexity of what you have to do and memorize. HOWEVER, it really depends what kind of guitar player and bassist you are talking about. For example Dave LaRue is probably smarter and more musical than MAJORITY of guitar wankers today and even before. Take Steve Morse, and he's a freakin genious, composing, arranging and technically blowing away anything else. BUT Steve Morse and Dave LaRue together makes a PERFECT match, kind of like Yin and Yang. If none of this makes sense than just omitt it, cuz either you're a bassist, or a guitar wanker who SHOULD be a bassist :p :p :p :p :D .
I realize that correcting spelling is a job for the moderators but I just thought it would be fun to do here. Sorry Roubuster.

Uh.....
What was the question?
I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention.

Who is smarter?

A Smart Drummer I met when I was 14 said:
In a band it’s better to be with people you can get along with than to be with the best musicians in the world.
What I would like in a situation where I was playing in a band is one where everyone brings something to the table. While I love teaching I also love learning. I like the idea of a symbiotic relationship between band members where everyone is creating. This also promotes a democratic situation for the band. That is the most productive situation.

A band as a family?
No! A “family” run as a democratic society is not the best way to do this. This implies that all participants have an equal voice. Hopefully one does not take input from children concerning family events and functions with equal weight as an adults decision. Family units are best run as a loving dictatorship. There needs to be an Alpha character(s).
This gives me pause when I hear BP say “We are all family here.”

I for one encourage people to make their own choices. I don’t like when I have to make decisions for other people. If I had children I understand that would be different.

I will be the first to admit that it is a sad world when I have to become the voice of reason.
OK then here goes. --- It’s a sad world. ---

Back on Target
Is there a way to measure “Smarterness” from a sample set of bassists and guitarists and determine which is smarter? IQ Tests for everyone? Has this been done?
If the idea that guitarists get more chicks than bass players is true then from an evolutionary point of view the answer would be guitarists.

The real answer
I am (primarily) a guitar player and people like to think of themselves as smart. I want power, control and glory. I have to be smart in order to do this. Therefore I need to be smarter. Still, I would love the idea of having someone smarter than me to play guitar/bass with. Impress me inspire me and intimidate me. Make me sit on my ass and play my guitar. That’ll show you. Since playing guitar is one of my arts and passions it really should be treated as an exhibition and not a competition. The only person I want to compare myself with is, myself. But if it takes something like comparing who’s smarter to motivate me to be better than I am right now, I am willing to use that as a tool.
Is smartness measured from a cognitive reasoning point of view or can it be quantified from an abstract thought process as well?

The answer you’re looking for.
Guitar players are smarter cause we're the guitar palyers and you're not. Bass players are dumber because they play with fish. It’s the only life form that they feel they can out wit.

There is no way to determine the answer here in this forum. All of us, bass players and guitar players alike, are obviously the smartest musicians out there.

How do I know that?

Because we are playing Ernie Ball MusicMan instruments!

Geez...you guys are making this much harder than it has to be. Clearly bass players are smarter. Why? Because they know when to keep their mouths shut. They know they already have one foot out of the band. Case in point - how many of Van Halen's problems do you think were caused by Michael Anthony? Has anyone ever heard John Myung speak?

Really BP, you can do better. That was tooooo easy... ;) ;) :D

1) Bass players are smart because they know they should be able to find more work. But on the other hand, a guitar player who learns to play bass would be smarter.

2) There are more signature guitars than signature basses. Again, making guitarists smarter.

3) G3 tours play much bigger venues than the 3B tour (Billy Sheehan, Stu Hamm, Jeff Berlin). In Cleveland, the B3 are booked at a tiny club (Wilbert's).

4) A six pack of EB Slinkys is much more affordable than a four pack of EB Slinky Bass strings. Again, making guitarists smarter and more economical.

5) Guitarists have cooler effects and amps (IMHO).

as a guitar player, i tend to notice bassists are more serious in their approach in music generally. i think a lot of this is due to the fact that many guitarists just do it to look cool... usually when someone picks up a bass, they want to be musicians, or they have a deep curiosity. also, many of the bassists that i know are very smart, have a lot of common sense, and are deep thinkers
So what you are saying is that all the bass players you personally know, are smarter than you? ;)

An analysis of my band is quite revealing! In descending order of musicality.

1) Drummer - Complete mastery of all aspects of music. Can write score out for an orchestra if needed. If harmony parts need working out, listens to track once then tells us all what our parts are etc etc..

2) Bass player - Also highly musically skilled. Can't be arsed to practice but instinctively plays fantastically without really trying.

3) Lead Guitarist (me) - Self taught. Good bluffer but looks like a rabbit in the headlights when drummer uses a 'proper' musical term.

4) Singer - Terrible really. Got job because the band was his idea. Loses voice big time about 2/3rds of the way through most gigs due to cigar and alcohol consumption. Wouldn't know what a sharp or a flat was to save his life even though that's what he sings mostly.

However.....who's first at the bar having packed his gear away first (i.e put his microphone back on the stand)?.....the singer!!!!!

Who always had first choice of de ladeez?(due to arrival first at the bar and being inevitable focal point of band)............yup.The Singer!!!!!

Who hasn't had to shell out £1000's on gear?.......the singer!!!!

Who doesn't have to lug tons of crap around in the middle of the night?......etc etc

So I reckon the singer is by far the smartest every time!!!:D
