You don't make your singer buy his/her own Rack equipment/mics/monitors and contibute to the band's PA?

Regarding the Advanced degree question - I'm only a couple of courses away from my second undergrad degree - in M.I.S., but I have a Master's in Cat Psychology ;) and a Ph.D in Banging my head against the wall with a minor in Hard Knocks :D

We normally play in a place with a house pa so no extra gear is necessary for old golden larynx, although one of those gismo's that puts vocals back in tune might be a good idea (although I would guess he would have to be at least in the ballpark for it to work)?:D

An analysis of my band is quite revealing! In descending order of musicality.

1) Drummer - Complete mastery of all aspects of music. Can write score out for an orchestra if needed. If harmony parts need working out, listens to track once then tells us all what our parts are etc etc..

2) Bass player - Also highly musically skilled. Can't be arsed to practice but instinctively plays fantastically without really trying.

3) Lead Guitarist (me) - Self taught. Good bluffer but looks like a rabbit in the headlights when drummer uses a 'proper' musical term.

4) Singer - Terrible really. Got job because the band was his idea. Loses voice big time about 2/3rds of the way through most gigs due to cigar and alcohol consumption. Wouldn't know what a sharp or a flat was to save his life even though that's what he sings mostly.

However.....who's first at the bar having packed his gear away first (i.e put his microphone back on the stand)?.....the singer!!!!!

Who always had first choice of de ladeez?(due to arrival first at the bar and being inevitable focal point of band)............yup.The Singer!!!!!

Who hasn't had to shell out £1000's on gear?.......the singer!!!!

Who doesn't have to lug tons of crap around in the middle of the night?......etc etc

So I reckon the singer is by far the smartest every time!!!:D

I was gonna say the same thing.

Damn singers!!!!!!

Scott.

Nope. I'm 18. ;)

sorry guys, i got ya beat.
17 here.

as to the thread:
i read in some recording magazine, that if your the recording engineer, the best person to bring in to the studio when your mixing it down, would be the bass player. supposedly they dont say much, and when they do, it actually furthers the sound of the mix in a good way.

now i dont agree with that, since i would DEFINATELY want to be there. i guess it depends on how the band works...if theres one person that does basically all the writing/composing and whatnot, i think he should get final say.

I'm glad you don't agree with that, what was the magazine called? Was it Mad magazine?

my last bass player sat around watching Passions all day and drinking something called "cannidian sipping whiskey." (the label has a BIG picture of a burley outdoors looking fellow with a big sled dog - and he kept in in the FREEZER!!! it was like drinking a whiskey flavored bannana slug)

I'm voting for guitar players on this one because I never ended up on a dialisis (humm... spelling...) machine 3 hours before a show because I was all cracked out over some soap opera.

as a guitar player, i tend to notice bassists are more serious in their approach in music generally. i think a lot of this is due to the fact that many guitarists just do it to look cool... usually when someone picks up a bass, they want to be musicians, or they have a deep curiousity. also, many of the bassists that i know are very smart, have a lot of common sense, and are deep thinkers

It's all an elaborate ruse to make up for only playing one note at a time. If they ran around looking happy all the time we'd realise they have an easy life;) :D
