Why did my low E string on my bass unravel when I tried to install it?

I bought a set of EB super slinky (45-100) bass trings to install on my Hofner copy bass. When I tried to install the low E, instead of tightening on the peg, the winding on the string simply unraveled. Now I have a bass with three usable strings. Must I buy an entire new set to fix this?

Most likely a bad string or you cut it before it was wrapped around the peg... ??

I had not yet cut the string when I began to wrap it. I usually do that last, even though they are way too long for the guitar. It started to unravel right at the point the string meets the peg, so there was no way to stretch it enough to even begin to tighten.
