I can use 10-46 on ANY Other of my guitars (carvin, Ibanez) And love the feel but I cant stand anything other than 9-42 on my JP or Axis? Ive tried several different brands of strings and still, I hate 10s on any of my EBMMs? Why?!
dunno dude I think it's subjective. I think the opposite. When I had my JP6 I didn't change the stock gauge from 10-46. It just felt almost like 9's to me
Who knows. I only like .010s on my Petruccis. I only like .010s period. Anything less feels too light. Odd since back when I was a teenager, I only used .008s. Tens seemed like piano wire. In fact, when I tried out my first Luke, it had .009s on it and they seemed too light. When I sent it to EBMM for warranty work, I had Jon set it up with .010s.
It must just be a combination of tiny little things adding up - the neck profile, width, fret size, nut height, bridge, set up...and how those things interact with your anatomy and physiology - finger length, hand size etc.
If your guitars sound good with the 9-42s, don't worry about it - there is no rule to say that you must play with big gauge strings - it isn't a strongest man contest!
I play with mixed gauge strings on mine - standard tuning: 8s on the top three and 9/10s on the bottom 3 (for those riffs and drop D moments).
I haven't changed from 10s on my petrucci yet, but there's something still not quite right about the feel of it. May go to 9s and see what happens. And of course an 8 for the high EEEEEEEEEEEEE
I put 9.5's on my 20th and man it feels awesome. 10's felt too hard and 9's felt too slinky, so 9.5's were just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately I had too go with the "other" guys for these though
