It's not broken it's a stress crack in the paint and the paint only. This seems to happen with temperature changes. Very common issue. Is the new guitar, brand new? If so, contact you dealer and discuss the issue with them.

Hope this helps, Glenn |B)

I would say it is rather normal for a bolt on neck guitar. I had an old Stratocaster with a major paint crack like that... it played just fine by the way. Like GWD said, if it is new and under warranty bring it up with your dealer.

that's a pretty serious crack though....and appears to be the black sparkle roasted neck variety, so it can't be too old.

I wouldn't agree with the above folks that it's very common (not to that degree at least), but I do agree with them to address it with the dealer you bought it from. Good luck.

If you bought it from EvilBay, then your on your own. Doug, it looks like it's sapphire, and not a roasted neck. The Black sugar has a gold fleck in it.

Good luck, just put the guitar in the case when your not using it, it might help the crack not to get larger.

Honestly that is a pretty severe crack and looks as though maybe someone knocked over your guitar without you knowing. Could that be a possibility? Most stress cracks will start out as fine lines in the clear coat, that looks kind of deep and jagged in the corner of the joint as if it took a good knock. It should not effect playability, but take it to a tech to have see what he could do to stop the spreading.

Yeah, you are right it isn't common. I meant to say it can happen with a bolt-on neck guitar, not necessarily a JP6. I am still pretty sure it won't affect the sound or playability. Largely just a cosmetic defect. A bummer no doubt, but at least no one can see it when you are playing.

Keeping the guitar in it's case when not being played as Glenn suggested is a very good idea. Have you been doing that? Which country did you buy it from? If it's gone through a big change in humidity then I'd say it is likely just a crack in the finish. It's hard to take I know.

Bolt on necks =yes it happens.

I see a lot of guitars pass through my mate's workshop and it does happen with a lot of guitars - all makes.

If you buy a guitar through a dealership then it is covered under warranty. If you circumvent the dealership network then caveat emptor.

My mystic dream has several cracks, in my local shop and on this forum, I've been told it's "normal" and there is nothing we can do...Temperature, humidity, paint and varnish thickness...

Just the same on my precious TG Luke, hairline cracks, but it definitely does not affect playability.

Spud, I agree with your Caveat emptor, but when you talk about circumventing the dealership, it's a little bit tough, to my opinion. For a lot of people, including me, sometimes the only way to buy the guitar they dream of is buying a 2nd hand one... nothing to do with spoiling dealers or whoever of their business... well, to my opinion :)

oh yeah totally agree with you. I wish I could go out and buy a new guitar regularly but having a son in University is eating up all my disposable income. At this time if I really want a guitar I've got to be searching the second hand ads. - I've bought 2 second hand balls. My JP6 was a road worn example and had the cracks too.It is not a problem and I have done something to repair the finish - you'd hardly see them now.

I'm gonna be on holiday in the States next year and plan to buy a guitar over there- but I fully realise that once I take the guitar to the UK the warranty is void, thats the companies policy, so I have to make that decision and live with it.

Anyway if it's any help to you this is what you can do to make the crack look better.

use some really fine wet and dry paper 1200 grit and sand lightly around the crack area. It wouldn't hurt to use some cigarrette lighter fluid on a cotton bud to clean the area of any wax.
Get a can of black paint and spray some into the lid top. Let the thinners evaporate so it's a bit thicker.

Use a very fine brush or even a cocktail stick and build the crack up with the paint and leave it a couple of days to harden off.

Then use some 1200 - 1600 - 2000 wet and dry paper and sand the excess smooth. The clear finish is quite thick - very carefull sanding and you shouldn't go through the finish.

I used "Guitar Scratch remover" to buff up see this thread
http://www.ernieball.com/forums/general-music-discussion/41650-guitar-scratch-remover-excellent.html

I would urge you to be cautious and only attempt this if you are confident.

A good Luthier should charge you about an "hours" bench time to do this for you.

EDIT
If you have to use a lot of force to move the screws holding the neck on then they have been "got at" and have been overtightened.

An e mail to Customer service should alleviate your fears

My HH AL had one when I bought it new from a dealer online. In other words, you couldn't see it in pictures (I doubt the dealer even knew it was there). I had a luthier look at, he said, "it's a stress fracture - very common in bolt on guitars". Assured me it is only a cosmetic condition. Then he played my guitar. He then explained that although I did not wind up with the Super model (due to the cosmetic flaw), what I got was the sneaky hot girl next door, likely not to freak out n me and be dependable and awesome for the rest of my life! I've never thought about that stress crack again. :)

This is what happens when the Guitar is grabbed by the neck and lifted horizontal by one hand. Go to Guitar Center in Texas and you will see it happen all day. All of the presure is at the neck joint from the body when the guitar is lifted in this way. Something has to give. The Poly coat thats basically a thin layer of plastic wont hold up to the pressure. Looks like the crack on this JP is going to spread.:(

Ahem, you will of course be declaring this purchase on your return to the UK won't you?
