A thread on TGP about Gibson bashing prompted this.

I've tried many times to get out of the EBMM rut, and to try to explore other brands. I went thru Fenders, Gibsons and even Ibanezes. They've all given me some problems at one time or another. But even then I still wanted to check others out. PRS, Suhr, Anderson, McNaught, etc etc. The rest were a bit of a question mark. Every Suhr I've played, I didn't like. They were well made, for sure, but I just couldn't connect. There's only one model of the PRS range I dig, and thats the DGT. I've yet to get mine yet, but someday, I will. McNaughts are too rare to get a try, and Andersons are just fantastic, but I've got no clue how to get one in Singapore brand new. Maybe one day.

But then, something ugly always rears its head. Consistency. What if you get a dud? What if that piece you finally get doesn't play well? There are some guitars that no matter how you set up, just don't work right.

What does this have to do with EBMM?

Well, I was reminded about this by a post that asked: "What guitar is there in the market that you can buy, and doesn't require some work of any sort? Anything you get thats good is bound to have a dud somewhere."

Those of you who know me know I've owned a total of 9 EBMMs at the height of my collection. None of them had any problems out of the box.

But this post is not about the 9. It's about ONE of them.

Last year, I had a friend who was in the USA. (NY, I think). He spotted a white Silhouette Special with RW board and a trem, and called me. I told him to get it for me, and I'll pay him back when he gets here.

So he bought it, and I loved the guitar the minute I collected it from him. It had everything. The right vibe, the right look, the right resonance. It had mojo.

Imagine my surprise when I checked with CS here on the DOB. I got the guitar in 2008? It was made on 21st Nov 2000. It was in the store for 8 years. LITERALLY waiting for the right owner. Somehow it happened to be me.

Here was a guitar, NEW OLD STOCK, lying in some corner in the US for 8 years. When I got it, it was PERFECT. No setup needed. No tweaking of the truss rod. The neck was a wee bit dry, so out came the wonderwipes. I've gigged with it. I've jammed with it. I've carried it around so many times, I'm amazed it's still in perfect playing condition without any setup. Singapore is 80% humidity all year round. There's NOTHING wrong with the neck. It sustains so well, it's amazed every guitarist friend I've got who's played it.

It's 9 years old now, and it's still an amazing guitar. Still my no.1. It's so well built, I've never had any problems. Maybe the output jack could do with some contact spray, but that's about it. It's become literally an extension of my creative voice. I'll probably be cremated with this one when I die, unless my son wants it.

What I wanted to say about this is that some companies out there in the guitar making world actually do get it right every time round. EBMM is one of them.

That's why we always come back...

Just wanted to share this thought I had this afternoon.

Yes, well,

I've been playing for 18 years now, and collecting and trading for 16 of that, I didn't discover EBMM till 2001 - I'd played an EVH in the late 90's but I was a solid fender and Gibson man back then. Now I've seen the light, but I'm turning bonamassa on you, I won't buy anything new from other companies, but the non balls in my collection are staying, i love my balls, but there's a lot of other stuff out there that EBMM aren't doing, and for that I need to go elsewhere, semi's for example.

I think as you say the constant run of quality with EBMM is probably the main thing that will keep people here, You can buy in the right CS, - Other companies are trying it now, but aren't quite there- setting up euro call centres for example (you know who you are!)

Just yesterday I traded emails with Jim Marshall's PA over a new amp I want in an unsual config, no problem was the reply, and it's the same here, nothing too much trouble, I remember looking for a part and trading emails with Beth on a Sunday - I mean c'mon a Sunday? - you won't get that everywhere, so it's all good.

I really don't understand why people brand bash, EBMM is just 'dare to be different' - other brands are 'traditional/Safe' - they had their expermients back in the day and now just produce on mass what sells for them, maybe it's wrong/boring, but the kid watching TV will want the shape that his hero has, regardless of brand, if the kid is individual enough he'll suss out early on that the guitar his hero plays won't make him sound better or had a neck like a baseball bat and he needs to find something that suits him or her...

This last few weeks has taught me (Whilst playing me DD luke and NOTHING else!!!) - that it's not ALL about the gear, don't get me wrong I'm a total gear whore and would sell my children for flame topped balls, but that said it's about the playing. Sterling used to have saying when responding to posts here "Great, now play the damn thing" - don't know why but that's been rattling around my noodle for the last few weeks, and partly why I've avoided the internet - I'm unplugged from the grid and no ebay no here no guitar shopping - - getting a new perspective...

It's good to step back and take stock of what you have collection wise, and I suppose how lucky we are that we all have trouble free instruments, i'm about to become a working musician again (first time in 12 years) - and I'm seeing instruments for the varied tonality as well as how cool they look!

Well that was dangerously close to adult posting so who'd like to see my light my farts????

Sorry for the (what may seem to some) as a random post!

OK I keep saying that choices are good and in the end we make tools for artists....I sometimes just want people to stop the over analysis and make music

Lionel you should never leave in the first place!!!!!!analysis

I agree with everything said above. And I completely agree with BP, these are tools and are meant to be played. I played a ton of Balls yesterday down at Pete's, and all of them were fantastic. All of them felt consistent, build quality was top-notch on all of them. I have to say that after playing that Silo, I like it more than my 2 AXIS ones I have at home. That thing just fit, and practically played itself. Same with the Al. EBMM is the Snap-on/ Mac tools of the guitar biz. Quality sells itself, and the EBMM's are great salesmen.

Consitent feel that fits me, that's what does it for me. I've been through many a brand, went through a PRS phase (owned 2, tried many), a Terry McInturff phase (owned upwards of five at once) and those brands had great consistency as well but EBMM guitar just seem to fit me the best. My first EBMM was an Axis that I bought in '99. The feel and playability of it was fantastic but I just couldn't get into the Floyd Rose and ended up selling it. For whatever reason, I didn't get back to EBMM until '06 when I got my first JP6 from Pete not too long after the JP clinic he hosted. I haven't looked back since. I picked up a JP7 a year later and then dumped them both in favor of my BFR. If I had the extra $$$, I would've kept them and got the BFR but I had to make the sacrifice to get the beauty I have now. I'm kind of in a JP rut myself as I just connect with the ergonomics, layout, play and feel of the JP line but I tell ya, I tried a H/S/H Sillouhette the other day and it felt like an old friend in my hands and I had never played one before.

I don't know what it is BP, but your guitars just "do it" for me.

I am telling ya, Silo Specials ARE DEEEEEEE BOMMMMMMMMMB! Can I get an Amen!!!!!!!!!:D

AMEN! Love them. Got together with my buddy last Sunday night -- just guitar, drums, beer, and bad vocals ;) I played my Silo Special from 4:00PM until 10:00PM playing all kinds of music. The SS sounded awesome!

I tuned it once right before we started. After a quick break for dinner, I was shocked that no tuning was needed. Not only was I using the trem quite a bit, but the tempurature and humidity changed (for the worse) as the night went on. The SS had perfect tune until it went back into its case for the drive home.

Great sound, comfortable, classy, inspiring. So, yes - AMEN!

All are great tools in their own right. To each his own. Find what you like and in the immortal words of FZ, "shut up 'n play yer guitar".

Things I have heard said

Dudley:
There's a lot of great guitar manufactures out there

Luke:
(To Dudley) Thank you for making me such a great guitar
(To everyone) Sometimes you just got to shut up and play

Sterling:
(To me) I think 11 years for a switch to wear out is pretty good
(Frankly I was proud of myself that I wore one out)

Me:
After I play my EBMM guitar for 4 hours, I'm ready to play for four more
Steve Morse is directly responsible for me buying my first EBMM instrument.
EBMM quality is directly for me owning 15.

I feel the same way as the OP does. Ive owned just about every brand out there. Somewhere around 87 guitars. At the moment Im down to 3. One of which is an EBMM. And the brands I never owned, friends of mine owned and I borrowed. Ive come to the conclusion that EBMM has the most consistent quality control ever. Its literally amazing. Even with strings/picks/straps/strap locks etc... You know that "Mojo feel" that a lot of players say that some brands of guitars have? Like maybe 2 out of 10 of the same model might have that "Mojo" only if its built just right and set up just right and with the right pickups, action etc.. ALL EBMMs have that "Mojo feel"! Why more people dont play EBMM is beyond me:confused:.
