i've tried bongo a couple tmes
and i really like it
tones, neck, feel AWESOME
my only concern is that
musicman do not have a hardshell molded for a BONGO yet
otherwise i will be getting a bongo instead of sr :)

I ended up getting a gig bag for my Stingray because the hardshell was too damned heavy.

I never understood the logic of trying to protect a $1000 instrument with a $20 bag. I must be the only player in the world who has never used a gig bag.

This isn't a $20 bag :)

The reasoning behind me getting a gig bag for my Stingray is that the hard case exposes the bass to more risk than the bag does in my particular situation.

I mostly rely on public transport to get to gigs and rehearsals. While it is possible to take the case with me in most of these situations, it often involves an unsatisfactory compromise.

Ever tried getting a bass hard case up and down the stairs of a double-decker bus while it's moving? It's no problem with the gig bag, but I have dropped cases down the stairs before (thankfully with no damage to the bass inside)

With a gig bag, you can take the bass with you on a coach or train. Some coach drivers insist the hard case is stowed in the luggage compartment under the bus... theft risk. Sometimes it's possible to stick the hard case next to you on the train, but often the train is too packed.

If I was driving, I'd use a hard case. As it is, a bag is safer.

That makes two of us - it helped that my dad is a first class tradesman and used to build them for us until we were old enough to afford to go and buy our own. :)

Me Three. I'm def Old School when it comes to that. Back when I first started buying basses they only sold them with hardshell cases included. Gig Bag? What's that?

dlloyd makes some good points for you city folk though. But us rural boys will stick to a hardshell case so it'll be protected in case it falls off the tractor on the way to the Elks Lodge.;)

I never use a gig bag either. Too many nights loading equipment and my bass case or cases hit the ground or are smashed. If I was using a gig bag, then my basses would be firewood.

I only use the bag when on foot. In a van/car situation I use the case.

I have to add that I am going to buy a double gig bag just for practice (when I drive with my basses). Then I can play at least 2 different basses at a loud volume.

Still though, for gigs, it's cases only for me.

You can't go wrong w/ any of them. In my case I just bought one a year starting w/ the Stingray, then the Bongo, and I just picked up my first Sterling a few days ago. No complaints about any of them...
