I normally hang out on the Bass side of the website, but I thought I would migrate over to this side to ask a question.

Dilemma: I had a MIM Strat which has been stolen. Not a big deal, since I play bass, but having a 6-string is always handy. Annoying, as it was my first real instrument. So I am looking to replace my Strat.

Solution: I would like to replace said Strat with a real instrument, namely a Music Man. Thus, I have been eyeballing the Luke, and Silouette, even the Reflex.

Problem: One of the things that bugged me about my former Strat was the narrow nut. I didn't like the narrow string width. Maybe it's because I normally play bass, or that I seem to have corpulent fingers, but I want a wider nut. However, having checked the MM website specs it appears other than the JP models all the guitar nuts are 1 5/8".

For the record, my local music store has a few MM guitars in stock. I have tried out an Axis, Sterling Axis, and Silouette and in these cases the necks felt OK, but the string spacing was less than comfy for me. I have also tried out a couple JP's there, and the 1 11/6" spacing was much more comfy, almost bearable. But, the neck was way too thin.

So, my big question would be, is there a special order option or model I don't know about that would sport a big chunky neck, most importantly a wider nut, but combined with a more Strat-like body?

Thanks

Sorry man ... there isn't.

The necks vary in thickness, radius and contour, but you're getting roughly the same spacing in all of them (except the JP, but as you noted, the profile is thin).

Just of those things ... if you bond with the necks, you'll love 'em. If you can't, you'll need to look at something a little different. I'd give it a solid try though- pick something with a neck on the thicker side- Albert, Silhouette, etc.

You could always rock a Silhouette Bass. They aren't exactly guitars but you can order one strung E-E, tuned just like a guitar and octave down. They are great for noodling guitar and bass licks. You can even play some chords (has almost a piano vibe like that). The nut is 1 3/4" and neck is similar to a silhouette guitar in terms of being thicker than a JP. These are some of the coolest instruments that we make and definitely deserve some consideration.
