Congrats on a nice green Big Al - and, good luck with your wife. Just tell her that you told her that you wouldn't buy any more five string basses. Then criticize her for not listening to you more closely. Now she's on the defensive. You're welcome...

Thanks! I have also mastered the art of the "non-sorry". That's when you apologize like this: "Gee honey, I'm sorry that you're mad about my new bass". Notice how I never apologized for buying it? I just apologized that it made her angry.

edit:
I'm kidding. I'm not really a jerk to my wife. I have actually tried to use the "non-sorry" but Wendy calls me out on it every time.

This one will have to hide, I have no choice. I do like Tollies suggestions though! If I get caught I"m bringing that out... I told her I'd keep buying & selling basses for a profit so I'll use that excuse too. I have a week before it ships here to work this!

Just cuz it's refreshing, here's the opposite scenario, from real life,
not exactly verbatim quoting, but it's pretty damnt close.

B [B=bassist]: Happy Birthday, ready to head out for dinner ?
W [W=wife of bassist]: We have a reservation, let's roll.
B: Gotta stop at music store, need spare cord for tomorrow.
W: No problem.

B: Wow look at that bass ! Musicman, great color, too. Nice set up. Plays great.
W: So buy it and let's go. We have dinner reservation.
B: Yeah but $1800 ? I've never spent that much before ....
W: Of course. Your uglee beat up bass is 20 yrs old, prices do rise over 20 yrs.
B: It's a great bass but $1800 is a lotta money.
W: You make that in 3 gigs. Buy it and let's go ! It's my birthday ?!?!

Yes he bought it, and he plays about 100 gigs a year at about $500 each.

full disclosure:
He also has a reasonably secure government job with great benefits.

At our day job, we'd compare notes every monday morning. One such
monday morning sticks in my mind:
Me: Had one decent night, one sukkee night, and one cancelled.
Him: Had only one event booked, and it was cancelled, so I made
$500 without even leaving the house.

This is for real ... dudes stay in that well run band for 20yrs and more.

BTW, thaz a Lava Pearl SR5 that he bought ... on his wife's birthday, at
her insistence
["We have a dinner reservation!"]

Nice axe!

My trick is to waite till no one's at home, put it in the study
with my other Basses and pretend it's always been there ;)

That somehow, in a twisted way, parallels my situation. No
wife to sneak past, but sometimes I'll get caught trying to
sneak a new bass past *The Diva*. Ms Diva claims to lock
onto a particular bass for its 'perfect' voice in the diva duo.

I say "claims to" cuz she's been known to fall in love with a
bass that she had previously actually *banned* from play
[as opposed to merely disliking a bass].

Her usual challenge to the arrival of a new bass is "What's
that bass ? Where's my baby ?!?". My typical cover story
is "Your baby is out for repair," or something along those
lines. As with wives, the success rate is erratic at best :-/

I saw the classified ad for that one right after it sold. Nice score! I have a single H Big Al, which I love, but I sometimes wonder if I should have gone for the SSS.
