wipe on poly

Not sure if anyone else has tried this and not even sure it helps. I use Minwax Wipe On Poly on the back of the neck. I use a cotton ball to wipe a small amount on the back of the neck. Let dry for 6 or so hours and then use 0000 grade steel wool. It drys sticky and the steel wool gets the neck as smooth as before. I wonder though if I am simply removing what I applied?? If not then I would like to think I am helping the stability of the neck. Any thoughts or suggestions if anyone has gone this route before...thanks.

Unless the poly applied was really really thin, you're probably not removing the poly, just smoothing the surface. With 0000 steel wool, you'd really have to go at it for some time to remove much material.

FWIW, I don't think the poly will aid stability in any way at all and I would regard it as completely unnecessary (and possibly detrimental to future resale value). I would expect a strong consensus amongst the veteran EBMM owners here that their unfinished necks are just as stable as their other guitars with finished necks. Even with finished necks, some are more stable than others and will require more or less frequent truss rod adjustment. But that's OK, adjusting your truss rod is safer and easier than making a bacon sandwich. There is no reason to be afraid of it or go to such lengths as varnishing your neck to avoid it.

I totally agree.....I'm one of those guys that likes to tinker even when it isn't needed.

Yeah me too. When it involves screw drivers and soldering iron I often end up in the "Oh Crap club", as in "Oh crap, and I still have to put all this back together in working order".
