Help! Wiring stuff up...

Howdy,

I do need some help (says the wanna be guitar techo). After firstly patting myself for wiring up a HSS with a super switch, i then go to plug the guitar in and hear the results. Well it was certainly connected, earthed etc. However i notice that with the pup selector switch in the bridge position, the neck pickup is activated and like wise with the neck postion, this activated the bridge pup. The only switch selection that worked correctly was the middle! I stuffed up big time, but the pups are great.

So the question i have is what do i do to exaclty rectify the situation. The schematic i used is GuitarElectronics.com WDU-HSS5L11-02.

Do i switch over the wiring from the left to right and visa vera, or left to right, right to left and then back to front???!!!

What guitar is this on? And what was wrong with the earlier wiring?

Along with what Beej said - Is this a Strat Super Switch? If so, the contacts will be different in arrrangement than a similar Music Man two-wafer switch.

The first thing I always do when I get a super switch or two wafer switch is map out the contacts functionality on a sheet of paper so I know what pin goes to what other pin for each position of the switch; the ins and outs, so to speak.

I suppose maybe you flipped the switch 180 (in your head or in how you are looking at it) and then wired accordingly. Know what I mean? That might put the bridge and neck pups in the opposite positions on the switch.
I don't know what you mean by left to right stuff. What you have to understand is that the switch in the diagram you provided may not be drawn upside down (although i would think most are) . It may not be drawn as if it is mounted on the pickguard and the pickguard is upside down? EBMM schematics are drawn as you would be looking at them on an upside down pickguard.

"Position" 2 & 4 sounds are correct, however they are in wrong position, in other words the other way around. In fact all the sounds are right, just in the wrong position, but for the neck position which is correct.

It is a super switch but not an MM.

Sure sounds like it's installed 180 out. Remove the switch, turn it backwards, put it back in.

I also map out switches when I get them. I become dangerous when I do this because I think of what could possibly be. Then I make it happen. It's why my sublhouette has 6 sounds for each pickup.

My first thought was to turn it around, however the guts of the switch face into the cavity and there is little room on the other side of the switch and the guitar body. So i have to re wire the switch. As i think this is the only option, do i just transfer all the connected points one from side to the other and visa vera? Or re wire the connections north to south and visa vera?

If you can't take the easy way out and just flip the switch, then you're left with having it rewire the bridge and neck pickup to their proper spots. Shouldn't be too bad though, you already did a good job once!

Or, you could just learn to live with a backwards switch I guess...

If it makes you feel better, the last time I had a 'professional' tech install pickups, he overlooked a bridged connection and it ended up have all pickups on all the time.

Just put all the connections in the opposite spot. Obviously, your middle pickup is fine though.
