This is conclusive proof that for situations like this (live band audition vs. studio or hired-gun work) having the right energy and attitude is WAY more important than being note-perfect. I screwed up a lot, but didn't let it bug me too much.

Now comes the happy problem of learning the entire set list ASAP! These guys gig once a month, so I've got some homework to do.

Thank you!

A lot of this stuff is really repetitive and simple, but it's not boring to play...it's all about the groove.

"Play That Funky Music" is dead easy, but it is a BLAST. It can even make geeky middle-aged white guys like me dance. :D

And when you're holding the bass and working with the drummer to make the funk happen, you can dance and not be self-conscious!:cool:

Maybe I should start shopping for some Bootsy clothes....

Mr. Weaver:

I am more than twice your age.

Please accept a little (un-asked for) advice born from the wisdom that those years bring. Just something that occurred to me when I read your post...hopefully you and/or someone else might find it useful.

Enjoy, and take advantage of, your youth. Have a BLAST playing what you love now, but never forget that you cannot play it forever. You will have to move on eventually.

Can you imagine a 47-year-old guy playing Tool, Rage, etc.? I've got a grey beard and weigh 40 lbs more than I did at your age.

Do you really, SERIOUSLY think that the music you're playing now will remain relevant in 25 years?

Most pop music dies, thank GOD. But some music is timeless. You can play it forever. And it's GOOD MUSIC.

That's what you'll be playing when you're 47.

So:

Don't limit yourself. Expand your mind. Even old stuff is cool. Even old people can groove.

It's all about the groove, man!

There is quality to be found in all forms of music. There is also absolute crap to be found in every genre.

The trick is to develop an ear for quality, not for trendiness.

Here endeth the old geezer lesson.

I was into the bands that he(Mr. Weaver) likes(Tool,Rage)15 years ago and it seems at this point they are still relevant and influencing a newer generation.... The guys in Tool and Rage(Audioslave) are pushing 40(not much older than you) and are still going strong.... You shouldn't have to be pushed into a certain genre of music just because you get older.I say play what you like and never let anyone tell you you're too old.........:)

Ok, I'm still in my 20s (29) and I love Rage and Tool, and I hope I do when (or is it "if";) ) I'm in my 50s. I do think it's natural to soften a bit as you get older, for instance; lately I've gotten into country and bluegrass in a big way. I really love Alison Krauss. But I still dig the hard stuff. I do not dispose of my old heroes. My taste in music is wider. It's win-win. I love Jaco, but I still love Steve Harris. I dig Mark Knopfler, and I dig Dimebag Darrell too. Bach was a genius, as was Aaron Copland. Blah, blah etc.... And as far as playing the stuff, you don't lose your ability to play rock music as you get older. Some people might think it looks strange, but that's their problem.
An example:
I saw Sting in concert in 2004. What I saw was a 53 year old man that was at the top of his game. When they played Police-songs, he rocked harder than the Police ever did. He even jumped up and down on stage. The bass-parts were dead on, and his voice was ten times better than when the Police were big; with the same range in the top but with more power, and a fuller, warmer tone.
Some people still go: "Oh, he's not as good as he was w/ The Police!"....Well, that's their opinion, which they're entitled to, but I also think some people really has a thing for nostalgia and that they listen more with their eyes than their ears.;)

adouglas for the record im into all types of music. from hard rock to classical! by no means was my post meant in a derogatory manner. im glad you got the gig man. i even like bluegrass. you gotta have talent to play any type of music. and im a fan of talent. and yes the guys from tool are in there 40's. i love tool because the way they write there music. weird timing ect.

i also look up to people like larry graham, bootsy, les claypool (also in his 40's), and flea just to name a few. i will be going to bonnaroo this year. to see some jam bands i really dig. Alison Krauss played there one year. but man i wasnt attacking your age or music preference. i was just trying to have a conversation about music. i cant find many people who like music, with an artists ears where i live. and it seems like im having that problem here. and i dont want that. yes i might be young but you where to at on point.
