Wonderwipes on a raw neck

I have a completely raw, absolutely no finish maple neck with a maple fretboard. Will it be OK for me to use wonder wipes on it? It's built up a bit of grime that i want to get rid of, and i want to protect the board from building up more grime. The gunstock oil thing seems much harder and more expensive than wonderwipes, and i want to take the easy / cheap way out.

It's fine.

The gunstock oil and wax is really not very difficult at all.

WW will help clean and protect it, but it's not the same as a hardening finishing oil, such as the Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. Tru-Oil is really no big deal to use. Clean the wood, apply the oil, wipe it off, let it dry, buff it out - voila!

I use the WW fretboard cleaner on all my ball necks, and the Gunstock treatment has worn off long ago on the older ones. The WW do a great job!

I used the WW fretboard on some balls last year that got a little dry. It did a great job, they felt pretty nice afterwards.

I really doubt the original gunstock treatment has completely worn off.

We're talking about raw wood here. "There are two types of oils, those that cure and those that don’t cure. Oils that don’t cure should generally be avoided because that can continue to seep into the wood leaving the surface unprotected. They can also leave a sticky surface on the wood. Linseed oil and Tung Oil are both oils that cure and work well as finishes." Understanding Wood Finishes

Nothing wrong, imo, with using WW's, but unless I'm mistaken, it is not a curing/hardening finishing oil, such as Birchwood Casey is, therefore not as effective for use on raw wood.

I would say that on my EVH and red Axis the finish has long gone on the necks. They are both 10 years old and have been played to death and refretted. The necks used to get really sticky and horrible in a humid gig environment. But since I have been using the WW's with every string change they have not been sticky or the like once.

having a neck that can absorb excessive moisture is asking for trouble. (backbowing , twisting , & warpage )
the gunstock oil needs to be used if your neck is bare . it seals the wood from absorbing unwanted stuff......... like sweat & water.
wonderwipes are awesome for cleaning & conditioning the wood. but you do want the wood to be sealed up w/ tru oil too.
