Okay, I played the Y2D exclusively at rehearsal tonight. Here, in no apparent order are my thoughts about it:

* I was surprised how comfortable it was to play, since I'm used to my Petrucci 6-string. Even though the neck isn't as thin/flat as the Pet, I could play it like I've been playing it all my life.

* This guitar has fantastic sustain! Which I had discovered playing it acoustically, but plugged in proved it all the more.

* There is considerable output difference when you use different positions on the pickup toggle switch. I guess you'd expect this when you see the wiring diagram, since one position engages just the single coil pickup, while all the other positions employ at least one humbucker, or pickup combinations.

* Amazing versatility among the pickup selection options:

position 1 (neck humbucker only)
great for bluesy chording and other stuff that needs a 'meaty' sound

position 2 (neck humbucker + bridge humbucker)
I found myself liking this for flatpicked chords / arpeggios using clean amp settings.

position 3 (single coil only)
I didn't use it much, but if you want a little 'quack' you can get it at this setting.

position 4 (single coil + bridge humbucker)
An interesting combination good for soloing, arpeggios, or just about anything. Gives a hot output with some extra edge.

position 5 (bridge humbucker)
Nice and bright, great for distorted power chords, or clean sounds with a treble bias.

* The output of the pickups is *VERY HOT*. I had to keep the volume pot rolled back a little to keep from distorting when I wanted clean sounds. This is understandable, as we all know how much Mr. Morse loves to use his picking-hand pinky to roll that volume pot. I think he moves that pinky as much as his fretting fingers when he plays! What a tweaker!

* The Floyd performed as expected.. very solid tuning stability. You can't pull up because the trem is flush mounted and there's no route.

* The tone of the guitar is sweet. It sounds a lot 'meatier' than the Petrucci, as you would expect since it has so much more wood, and it's poplar+maple top versus basswood.

* The fretwork is fabulous, the top+finish are beautiful.

All in all, the guitar played as great as it looks. Smart guys- Dudley, BP and Steve Morse.

Thanks for the review on the pick-up selections and sounds

My head is spinning from the positions being backwards to me, but yeah that about nails it! I'm thinking of rewiring the neck/single spot to be 2 coils total instead of 3, so I can nail an even more sucked out bluesy sound, but all in all this guitar ROCKS! I've "gigged it" twice, and been very impressed both times, even got some compliments on the guitar, too.

The only thing I can find wrong with it at this point is my playing quote stolen from NorM

Great review Steve! Yeah, it's a beast alright.

I'm actually loving the switching. It's still weird at times as I'm used to the standard Morse, but it's much easier to switch through positions.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't go so far as to call my message a 'review'. It's just an unorganized group of thoughts. Maybe someone with more authority and better writing skills will give us an in-depth Y2D review one day!

Philip, I think I'm going to keep the JP6. ;) I have a purple Ib@nez S370 for sale though! :D

I have a stra...er..uh...a non-EB guitar (that I don't play anymore) with a humbucker I put in the bridge, neck and middle stock. I liked the sound of a single coil in the neck position very much for clean sounds, and I hated the original single in the bridge. I'm surprised at the location of the single on the Y2D, I would've imagined it would be better closer to the neck pickup. Maybe Steve likes it there I guess. I just figure it would soften it up a little.

I think that single coil placement acts better with Steve's KFC chicken picking (sorry Tommy;) )

Sounds really great :)

The only thing I'm kinda dissapointed in your review is the FR not being able to go higher pitch / pull it up. Can you pull it up on the regular Morse model? Has recessing got anything to do with this?

It's Steve's preference not to have a floating trem and this is true of the regular model.

(You could set it up to float by having it lean forward, or you could route the body if you really wanted.)

"Routing" means carving it to have a hole for the FR in this case, right?

How come Steve does that Floyd abusing intro for "Highway Star" on his Morse if he's not able to pull up? He does some major pulling up there

Well, uh, I was under UPS house arrest until noon today, but I had to leave for a meeting that lasted until 1:30. Then I rushed home for an hour for more house arrest but had to be back for a meeting at 2:45. LUCKILY, the UPS guy showed up at 2:20. I had just enough time to open the box, get an enormous whiff of "new guitar smell", pick myself up off the floor post-swoon, play about two licks, and then run out the door for my other meeting.

why am I still here? I have a new guitar to play...

Home until noon? Man, you teachers got the life. I figured you had received the guitar already and had spent some time with it. Alright, we'll let you slide, but that paper better be on my desk Monday morning and ready for publishing. :D

Steve's personal floyd equipped guitars are floating. He only plays it on a couple of songs live though. Perfect Strangers is one that comes to mind, I don't remember him using it on Highway Star. Time to pull the live DVD out again.

The single coil and it's placement is the secret weapon of that guitar. I love it in the studio and live. Strat killer.
