Question y2d w floyd setup

Fellow forumites..I need your help. Anyone has a y2d with floyd, please post your measurements of;

- Relief (capo on first fret, fretted on 20th fret, what's the relief between thick E and the 5th)

- Thick E's bottom to top of 12th fret height in mm..

I'm trying to set mine up without having it very high action and NOT to have the strings buzzing as I fret each one on each fret..

I understand that buzzing is inevitable the lower you go and how hard you pluck but there has to be a sweet spot somewhere for sure.. Surely this can be attained..?? The guitar is now strung with EB 10s.

p.s I've taken it a number of times to a tech and he's assured me there's nothing wrong with the guitar but I just want to learn to do it myself as it inevitably settles and adjusts with temperature etc..

Hello

I am not sure that precise measurements will help you. Several parameters has to be taken into account : fret wear, bridge height ...
I always setup my guitar by feel only. If it feels good, if it sounds good ... then it's good.

I know mate..it's not about blindly copying someone else's setup but getting a feel for what others have/use.. My axe is pretty much new, I haven't played it a whole lot since buying it in December 08..and as for bridge height, that's the only way of adjusting string height as far as I can tell..

No ... I only adjust the string height with the truss rod. The factory setup of the Music Man guitars is good thus you only need to adjust the truss rod.

That's why I asked for both relief and string height.. Knowing what others use and are happy with will give me a guide.. Everywhere I've read about setting up guitars post ridiculously small relief's and very low string heights..doing those on mine makes it completely useless; buzz everywhere, can hardly bend etc.. I get the feeling that it's not right but the tech keeps telling me it's fine and the only way I can have it without buzzing is by having the action quite high (either huge relief or very high string height..) I just don't know what is correct and taking it to the tech each time and paying is not something I want to keep doing every time it needs adjusting (either because of temperature differences or because I'm trying different string gauges..)

Hold down 15th
.005 to .010 at the 6th or 7th fret. I know that's not very specific, but every guitar is different

Capo off
3/64 to 4/64(1/16) at the 12th.

That's how I do it.

I have some even lower than that, but it depends on the guitar.

One guitar, my fav orite even has higher action than listed above, but it feels right and plays great. You just have to tweek it till you get it where you want it.

Action and string height should NEVER be adjusted with the truss rod. Truss rod adjusts neck relief. Thats it!

Yes, it is very low action indeed, and you may need more to keep fret buzz to levels you're happy with and for your own comfort of course. I like my higher than that, it makes bending easier for one thing. As with any manufacturers specs, take the numbers as a starting point, not a goal to be achieved, and work from there to where you are happy.

Nowhere in the EBMM instructions does it say to adjust the truss rod to change action and string height. It says to shim the neck.

You guys are reading into that all wrong. That is assuming the only reason the action is out of wack is because the neck has moved. Such as if you left your guitar sitting for a few weeks and when you pick it up again you have string buzz. If your neck has changed due to climate your action will change as well and a truss rod adjustment will fix it. Obviously the bridge height or saddle height didn't change. Just the bow of the neck. However in a typical setup when changing string guage or even brand you do not use the truss rod to set action or string height. And to say that EBMM guitars are so perfect you will never need anything but a slight truss rod tweak is ludicrous. I have had to adjust saddle height, bridge height, etc. on every one I have owned. Any change in string guage, tuning, etc. is going to make this truss rod method just plain not work. The OP changed string guages so he is going to need to adjust action a bit by raising the bridge, he will need a slight intonation tweak as well, plus likely a slight truss rod adjustment.
