Ok, so I rarely post on these boards anymore, but one of the reasons is that I don't get to go out and buy gear very often and it makes me sad when I read about all these really great deals on new EB guitars. Petty, I know, but my wants tend to far exceed my means, so it is kind of a tease.

So today, I am writing because I actually have some great news. As some of you may know, my main guitar is an early 90's Sil that I adore above all guitars. One of the reasons that I don't buy electric guitars is that I can never find one that is as easy and fun to play as my Sil. I just lucked into the perfect guitar for me.

Except for one thing. The person who owned this guitar before me added Eric Clapton pickups for the neck and middle pickup. This, of course, just won't do. I was always having problems cutting through other musicians to hear what I was playing, unless I only played through my humbucker. No matter what the amp, my guitar sound got lost.

Then a friend of mine asked me if I had ever heard of Kinman. I said no, and he began to play his Strat, which was loaded with Kinmans. I absolutely loved it. That was about five years ago. I have been pining for a Kinman for so long, but I just never had the money or the time to play to make it worth the investment. Well, I am back, playing like crazy (and not because I recently lost my job, in case anyone was wondering) and I felt it was time to A) start looking for other people to play with and B) get my some Kinmans.

So I ordered an AVn 56 for my neck position. All I can say is "Wow". It has made the biggest difference and is absolutely silent. I get no outside noises and no hum at all. It sounds great and it cuts through anything. I have never been more happy with a pickup and it has made my guitar even more fun to play.

So anyway, yay! I get to write about cool gear for once and not have it be a wish list. I just ordered the Woodstock AVn 69 for my middle pickup. If you have never heard of Kinman, and are looking for something different, I cannot reccomend them enough. Of course they are a little on the premium end ($120 a piece) or at least premium to me, so they may not be for everyone. But the customer service there is awesome and there is a lot of cool information on his site.

Sorry to blab all over the place, but I am really excited!

Like this excited:

Hey- congrats! Nothing spruces up your favourite guitar like new pickups

There are quite a few noise-free killer single coils out there. Glad you found something you really love.

Hi Peter,

Have never tried Kinmans but have heard only great things. They’re made in Australia, right? Thanks for the tip, and let us know how it works out with the middle pickup installed.

Wondering if by Clapton p’ups you mean Lace Sensors? I tried them once, too glassy and dark for my taste.

Is yours a Silo or Silo Special? Picture?

I think it is just a Silo...

I will get some pictures of it up next week. I am having the setup fixed as well. After getting the AVn 56 in, I figured I might as well spend the extra $$$ to get my frets and neck tightened up and get my pots cleaned.

Once I get it back, I will post some picks. Some of you may get sad when you see it becuase it is definitely well loved. Of course some of you may inerpret hte statement "well loved" as " horribly abused"...

Oh, and yeah, they were Lace Sensors. They were way too muddy for me.

Yuck. Not a big fan of those either. I had a set on a Lado (Canadian Luthier) strat and replaced them with Bill Lawrence 280s. Guitar came alive with the new pickups ... was like a different instrument.

I personally know Chris Kinman and he lives here in Brisbane Australia. Simon (Mcvinyl) has some early Kinmans on his Silo, they may even be prototypes?

Yep, they are his early prototypes. I'm in the process of spending some time and money on the silo at the moment. I'm ditching the Kinmans and taking it back to the original HSH configuration. So if anyone's interested in a set of proto Kinman single coils let me know.

wow my friend was in Toronto in 2002 with his Gospel band. He then bought a Lado acoustic. It is great sounding and lovely made guitar. I wish I could buy one sometime in the future

i have kinmans in one of my strats too, they are ok but not sensational. the stock silo special pickups blow them away with ease, my opinion of course.

Glad to hear that. The Kinmans are way better than the original Strat pu's, so where does that leave F*nd*r.
I'm saving up for a Silo:cool:

yep go the silo special!!!! some of you know im stupid enough to own a Fender Rory Gallagher custom shop strat, well i bought it long before i liked EBMM. anyway, it sounds pretty good, but the silo special SMOKES it. not even close. i get these morons at gigs saying "where's your strat man, forget this Ernie Ball crap you keep playing, why dont you play a real guitar instead of bring toys to a gig?" and so forth. so i bought the Rory and the silo to a gig a few months ago to play them and compare them. Every single person i spoke to said the fender looked cooler, but the silo sounded MILES better. rory beat the kinman strat too.

all hail the mighty Silo Special, the strat killer!

Pots cleaned? Make sure you dont pay too much for that but if you do you might as well go for the tuning key degaussing, and have the frets recharged, and my favorite the magnets topped off.

Don't know about Kinman on that one, but the newer Fender noiseless ones (SCN) and the winding machines were designed by Bill Lawrence.
