I wish I could sing and play like Gene. And write a song like I was made for loving you. Seriously. He's Geneious.

Gene never wrote that song. Don't give him so much credit.
Paul wrote it with another co-writer if I recall correctly. ;)

I might have picked on Gene a little at the beginning of the thread but I am a card-carrying member of the Kiss Army. First album was Dressed to Kill, own all their KISStory DVD's, saw every tour since Creatures of the Night. Stopped after the "farewell tour" (first show at Tiger Stadium), then the "Psycho Circus" tour. When the other guys put on Ace and Peter's makeup, I "kissed" them off.

I've always been a big fan but the way they (Gene especially) have decided to take their career is not for me, and kind of made them a joke (TO ME) when they could have gone out with some pride.

And I know, people still love seeing them and have a good time, I guess I just hoped for better once the original band got back together and put the makeup back on.

And, yes, I play with a pick.
(rant over).

While Gene's style isn't to my taste, if his management called me and asked if I could fill in for him, I'd do it in a heartbeat. He may not be a Jaco or Clarke or whoever you find to be your bass hero, I'd still trade places with him anyday.

Kiss

One of the most entertaining concerts I've ever seen

The show was amazing.
The energy was great
The spectacle of it was intoxicating
The crowd was enthusiastic
The pyrotechnics were dazzling

The playing and songs? ... yeah, not so much

It was said earlier in this thread that "Gene is Gene". Great point, no more, no less.

We have every right to interject our personal opinions such as, "I didn't like what he played on XXXX", but to make bash someone for their playing style/ability/etc., is not what being a musicians is all about, it shouldn't be about competition. My humble 2 cents :)

That was my FIRST rock concert when I was 14. I saw the Rock and Roll Over tour. Wow that sounds SOoooo cheesey now, but back then, they were gods to me! I actually saw them 2 more times (Once w/ makeup & 1 w/o w/ Eric Carr on Drums *RIP*).

IF my mom only knew who I was seeing, she would have kicked my A$$! LOL

Gene Simmons is definately one of the great rock bass-players out there. Sure, he´s not a soloist and he does play with a pick but I don´t mind that. He´s great in a band situation and that is plenty for me. Rock solid bass lines. He´s played on records and done concerts for 40 years now. Great singer and song writer too. And Im pretty sure he would have done a splendid job if he´d played with bands like ABBA and Fleetwood Mac too if he´d had the chance to work with them. Keep an open mind, folks. Don´t judge him by the image.....

And I´m sure that he would have played Stingray basses full time if EBMM had custom made a couple of spaced out basses for him that fits the image. A Stingray is sound wise just right up his alley. But visuals, perhaps not so much....

Oh no. Why must Gene Simmons play a real Music Man? He should play something that matches his skills, like a broken cheap MM copy :p

Seriously, I'm glad to see that he play a Music Man too, but I just can't take him seriously as a bass player. Anyone who's seen his bass "solos"? :p

You want to see a solo? Here's a solo!
