I dont know who won this auction but it brings up a great story.

At the 2001 January Anaheim NAMM show we made 2 basses and two guitars with the American Flag. Ira got one of the basses and the guy from Savage Garden got one of the guitars. WE COULDNT GIVE THEM AWAY! we got all the comments about Buck Owens and more that were really strange....The next thing you know 9/11 hits and everyone starts askng about those NAMM Flag axes. It bothered me to no end.

Fast forward to the january 2002 Anaheom NAMM show and the isles were packed with the cheesiest chinese, Korean, Indain, Vietnamese, USa, Canada you name it! All with American flags! That year I decided to make a patriotic statement about America.
We have the booth done in USA theme...Mount Rushmore all the presidents Thomas Edison, Ben Franklin et all. I was George Washington with goofy ruffly clothes and white pancake make up and a stringray bass shaped like an axe and a springloaded cherry tree. That year I was appointed a seat on the NAMM board and you have to show up at noon and pose for pictures for the press and all the other industry dolts were dressed in suits an I came in George Washington garb......

The great thing about the statement we made which won us best in show is that we did not use the American Flag once...It is not that I dont love and respect the flag but I was so put off by the capitalistic/opportunist bandwagon jumping

Me too, especially by countries other than the USA. Anything to make a buck I guess.

Given the fact that he "married" another guy in an official ceremony in the UK last week, I'm surprised he didn't order his guitar with a "rainbow" finish

I had a rainbow sparkle bass once...it was a Modulus VJ with dual reversed P's ala Lee Sklar...I think...remember that one? Just trade me back my Ripper.....Like Envy Green??

That rainbow sparkle Moduli was a cool bass....tad heavy as I recall though.

Yep. Guess where all of those "Support our troops" car magnets are made? 'Tain't here, that's for sure.

They wouldn't make them if people didn't buy them. It all reminds me of "That Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven, Anymore" by John Prine. It was true 30+ years ago, and it's still true today.

He's not saying that at all. He said he loves and respects the flag. What he and so many other true patriots get tired of is people using the flag to put cash in their pockets and ignoring what it truly stands for.

Jingoistic patriotism without any real thought behind what it all means. Sloganeering, putting little magnets on their cars while completely ignoring what America should stand for, what America should mean.

I'll stop now before I drag us into a political discussion.

Re read my post please...but to summarize

1. six months prior to 911 we made some beautiful guitars with american flags on them NOBODY wanted them.

2. Days after 9/11 every jobber and manufacturer were ramping up american flag guitars to profit from tragic devestation.

3. I made the strongest patriotic statement in the history of NAMM and did it by honoring great americans and incorporating legendary US landmarks. I also didnt use the flag as symbolism as I felt that it was being abused at the time for profit and little else.

I hope this clears this up and lets get back ono topic if it isnt already done!

Maybe someone in the office could post a picture....
