Thanks guys! I have to admit that my better half actually fell in love with that color combo more than I did but obviously she's right when it comes to those things. I was focusing on the feel of the neck and the sound. I was also focusing on intonation as it is really important to me.
The GC guy let me use one of those Intellitouch tuners that clip on the headstock. After a couple of hours it was down to an American Deluxe Strat (gasp!) and this baby. I tuned each guitar perfectly and then proceeded to play every note on each string from the 1st to 4th fret. The compensated nut DOES work!
Big Poppa if you are listening, it was a BIG reason I went with the Albert Lee. (Well, that, the sound and the amazing rosewood neck!). I am new to guitars, but so far I have only noticed MusicMan and some ESP's as actually making their guitars with such a nut straight from the factory. Also for the record, the tuners on the "other" guitar were definitely not up to the quality of the Albert Lee's. Thanks BP!
I also tried a John Petrucci, and a Reflex. The Reflex is great and I might have even favored the pickups on it just a bit more but, the neck was a bit chunky for me compared to the Albert Lee. The JP has an amazing neck but the pickups were not my thing so the Albert Lee it was. It sounds pretty great through my Fender Super Champ XD.
Sorry for mentioning other brands but it was quite relevant to my experience today. Feel free to edit if you must...Now I have to practice so I don't feel like such a wanna-be!
He's afraid of remote controls and large guitar cases. As I approached the couch with the Albert Lee he did his Billy Goat impression and took the high ground. He wasn't too happy about having to move. He's my "little old man."
