Ok to spur the dialogue for Marty Albertson, CEO here is what I want to do.....

You are walkin behind a Guitar Center and a you stumble on a genie who asks you,

"If you could have one wish from Gutiar Center, What would it be?"

I want this to be pretty serious and respectful. The mods will delete anything in poor taste....This is a very rare example for you to communicate with someone who listens and has the ability to affect change.

Lets see where this goes!

Thanks
They Never Purchase Matching Headstock Music mans- Ask them to order more. TY

More love for the leftys please! I know that might be hard. When I walk into my GC (Langhorn PA) I see a million things I want to try but only about 1 or 2 things I actually can try. Typically the only basses I can try are F*nder MIM jazz and they are always terribly set up. I don't know how the rightys feel but I would imagine that a setup technician would be the most important improvement to GC, if they can't do anything about the lack of lefty stuff :(

One thing that might be really neat is if you could get all of the companys to send little sample pieces of wood with sample paint swatches to GC so people can see some of the hard to photograph colors in person!!!!!!!! WOW, forget the lefty wish ... this ones probably better.

BP..
I am optimistic that in light of your comment (somewhere) about the "Strat-Packers" coming of age that it will truly result in enough-customers-to-go-around-for-all.

Stuff we can do at a grassroots level can be as simple as offering music lessons to our kids, making sure music programs DONT get cut from our school budgets, supporting local music events, etc etc.. It is all deeply connected.

End result as it pertains to this thread is that more kids/adults will want to make music a permanent and meaningful part of their life! Somehow I sense you have a keen awareness of this, BP.. and Marty's support of Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation indicates to me that he's on that page as well.

GC Guys,

My experiences at the E. Brunswick and Springfield NJ stores have been favorable.

A wish/suggestion though . .

IMO, there is a huge opportunity in Monmouth County NJ. Loads of musician's
down here need to (1) trek over an hour to a GC, (2) buy online, (3) get ripped
off at the local store w/no selection.

The population in Monmouth Cty is huge/dense - lots of bands/musicians!
Rt 33, 34, 35, 36 . .doesn't matter, you'd make a killing ;)

+1 E. Brunswick is a great store but its almost an entire highway away (beginning of route 18 to almost the end of route 18)

I agree with the "case issue." It's part of the purchase. Done.

This past Sunday I visited a local GC and played several EBMM's.

The set up on the Stingray HH and Sterling HS made them un-playable.
The strings were nearly resting on the fretboard. The Stingray volume knob was missing and the battery was just about DOA.

I'd like to see qualified staff memebers go through once or twice a week and check some simple QC issues to make sure customers can actually play and properly evaluate instruments.

Thank goodness the Bongo 4-HH I played was fully functional. (Me likey ;) )

Re Case

Petruccirocks02, if you were charged the full amout on the tag and didn't receive the case I need to know asap. Please email me the sales ticket number & date to: [email protected]" and I'll look into it.
Thanks, Ed O

+1 on the case issue....

Case in point (no pun intended), I bought a graphite pearl bongo at my local GC, and my friend that works there told me that one of the other employees sold the case separately to another customer. Now because of that, I had to buy a gig bag instead for a bass that cost me $<street price edit>. As a solution to the case problem, if a case to a musicman is sold separately, I think that GC should either order a case for the customer at no charge, or take the price of the case off of the instrument if the case is sold separately. Just my .02.

Call me crazy, but I must be the only person in the US would actually likes to walk into GC and hear a young kid playing Metallica through a Marshall half-stack :). I guess it reminds me that when I was 16 the "mom and pop" stores wouldn't let me try anything and I just had to stare at the stuff in glass cases while they ignored me.

Here is my favorite GC experience. A young kid with his Dad was trying out the starter guitars in the Towson GC. I am sure everyone has seen this. On their way out the kid is staring up at the PRS guitars on the wall. The salesguy reaches up an pulls down a $10,000 model hands it to the kid and says "try this out". I know that would give a lot of people a heart attack, but I thought it was just brilliant. How times have changed....

Yeah, I've thought about that, but 30 minutes on I-10 brings me to Morongo Casino. Not exactly the place I'd think Marty would want me to be intercepted by on my way to GC. :p :D

Nothing wrong with a little pit stop at Morongo:D ...I went there after the last show I played in Yucaipa(Angel's Roadhouse). One of these days i'm going to win that car......Ok, back on topic now:) Like I said before, a little care for the instruments would go a long way at GC. As far as customer service, i've always been taken care of pretty well at my local GC.

I think a dedicated electronic tuner with a cord in the bass section and guitar section would go a long way.

I also like the kiosk idea allot. It would be great to be able to see what is in the GC network of stores. I can't always get to the bigger stores in my travels. The Visalia, Ca store is only a half hour away from me. I would like to give them the business since they are local.

On a side note the Visalia store is really trying hard to do it right. I have so far found the staff very engaging and willing to help.

This is the most interesting thread I've ever seen posted in a bass forum.
I'm happy to have a word or two.

Mr. Albertson, I worked for you, albeit briefly as a Sales Associate. And although GC takes a fair amount of bashing sometimes, I'd like to say that as a business model, and a retailer, it's a superb example of how to do business.

The Employee experience at GC can be whatever the individual makes it. With a TREMENDOUS Customer base and unequalled inventory, a Sales Associate can make a lot of $$, do a lot of good, and have a lot of fun if he/she wants to.
They also have the opportunity to advance as far as they want to in the Company, with new stores opening constantly. There's opportunity to get involved in many different aspects of the Industry and have some input and say in what goes on at Department level, store level and beyond.

I left after a short term at GC for the wonderful world of performing/touring as a bassist, with all of its perks- Leaving famly and friends for months at a time, hotel/motel rooms and food for months, endless miles driving, driving, driving, playing amongst cigarette smoke, stale beer, and sometimes less than charming (or sober) crowds. But the good certainly outweighs the bad (it's about the Music) and when it hits the pocket- Game Over. Nothing like it.
Honey, could you please make the car payment? I'll be back in two weeks, and we get paid Sunday, I think.

Anyway- I wouldn't mind the music being set lower in the stores, and private rooms to try out gear would be cool if do-able. I also acknowledge the right of kids -and-adults- to blast out riffs- if that's what they wanna do- I mean, instead of going home and ummm- practicing???

BTW- Didn't EB/MM at one time have a program where they hired "independent contractors" I guess to set-up and maintain MM guitars and basses at GC's in a sector? Did that not last or fly?

Thanks for listening, and good Music to all.

'Deal

I visit the my local GC here in Beaverton, OR pretty regularly. In the 7 - 8 years I've been going there, I rarely see any EBMM guitars. I've been told by a member of the staff there, that if they ever have a JP in stock it will be a special order. I can understand that production limitations at EBMM may not allow all the stores to have all the models in every color. It would be nice if there were at least a couple of instruments on display.

On the Music Man side of things, since there are limitations to how many guitars can be shipped, how about some brochures that have accurate color samples of the finishes available. I'm about to order a new JP6, and I've had a really hard time deciding on color since most of the finishes I've only seen online. With so many factors affecting how the image finally looks on my screen I really don't know what I'm ordering.

More frequent setup checks/fixes. Basses are often terribly set up in the GC near me.

+1000!

GC is the only store where I have played EBMM basses with wicked dead spots.

It also wouldn't hurt to have the kids who are right outside the front door chain smoking butts to pick up a polish cloth and wipe down a guitar with nasty fingerprints all over it.

I must say that this thread has been one of the most valuable exchange of ideas and constructive criticism I have experienced. Getting first hand knowledge of your store experiences will help us to significantly improve our stores. I am realistic and recognize that many things will take time to improve but at least we know with great clarity where to put our efforts. I can't thank all of you enough for your candor and open approach to helping. We will take to heart your suggestions and strive for 100% satisfaction. I have passed all of these on to our full staff so we can begin to prioritize and develop plans to make improvements.

My real wish is for GC to pipe loud music that is really good into every store.

Those trying things out can play along or go home.

Sweet Home Alabama on the hour every hour. :D

I must say that this thread has been one of the most valuable exchange of ideas and constructive criticism I have experienced.

As some of other guys have said already, Marty - thank you for listening. To have the negative along with the positive right up here on the internet has to be a bit nerve-wracking, but it seems to me that the overall response has been positive.

We old geezers can bitch and gripe about the music being too loud (if only my mother could see this) and fingerprints on the tuning keys and the scones being a bit stale, but we've had more than one "Guitar Center" thread and my outlook has always been the same - I don't want to go back to the 70s. I want to be able to walk in and play the gear without being treated to the magic organ of Donny Wilson, entertaining the mall-goers with skating rink renditions of the songs my grandmother loved.

I don't want the basses hung where I can't get to them, and no one else does, either - not really. We just have to come to terms with what it MEANS to have the gear down where it should be.

I can't thank all of you enough for your candor and open approach to helping. We will take to heart your suggestions and strive for 100% satisfaction. I have passed all of these on to our full staff so we can begin to prioritize and develop plans to make improvements.

From the forum, thanks to you and BP for giving us an opportunity to have this discussion.

Jack

PS: Tkarter is kidding about "Sweet Home Alabama". If he's not, I'll burn his Bongo.
