question looking down the neck toward the head if i was to turn the trussrod wheel to the right it would do what to the neck loosen the rod?

Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. (Great band name, that...."Lefty Lucy and the Tight Righties")

It's important to specify how you're looking at the rod. If you're looking from the bridge towards the headstock, then turning it to the right (clockwise) tightens the rod and makes the neck flatter (or bows it back). Turning to the left (counterclockwise) loosens the rod and allows the strings to pull more on the neck, making it less flat.

The whole clockwise/counterclockwise thing is reversed if you're looking from the headstock down towards the bridge, assuming you've got the adjuster at the base of the neck as on an EBMM.

A bass that has the adjustment up on the headstock is the reverse of the EBMM scheme.

My E string is buzzing around the 5th fret on my new sr even when raised. The repair guy at the shop swears the frets are level and, supposedly, adjusted the neck. I'm livin' w/ it for now, but it still kinda bugs me

So, back a bit, Maddog said he tightened his neck making it flatter to relieve the buzz. Would one recommend tightening to flatten the neck in my (above) situation? I know it depends on where you are on the neck when it buzzes, but the 5th fret is kinda strange - toward the middle.

It seems to me that loosening the neck (adding relief) would allow the strings to vibrate more w/out hitting the frets. ???

Basso,

I didn't quite say that. What I did was set the neck to flat then went back thru and redid the entire setup. You're problem sounds similar to mine. I had buzz around the 5th and 6th fret.

Here is a 3 step write-up that I am going to credit to Rod Trussbroken:

*straight neck (no relief at 6th while depressing 1st and 12th).
*adjust strings for no buzz from around 4th to last frets, ~3/32" string height at 12th fret.
*begin adding relief (small increments) to eliminate any buzz from 1st to 4th frets, ~business card thickness height at 6th fret while pressing at 1st and 12th frets.

I've used this process on both my 4 and 5 string Bongos with great success.

Hope this helps.
Tom

Ahh yes, I see ;)

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Now... why couldn't the repair guy w/ his years of experience try something like that

How bad is it to adjust you truss rod more than a 1/4 turn a day? or whatever people say

You should only need slight adjustments anyway, so it's a good rule to prevent you messing up your neck.

Hold the E string down at the first and 17th frets (the portion of the neck that moves when you adjust the truss rod). Measure the distance between the the bottom of the string and the seventh fret... you might need feeler gauges for this and a capo will help.

How much space have you got?

I believe your question was directed to Urwordsbreakmed, but maybe you can help me too (see have posts above).

I loosened my neck a tad and the buzz is about the same. The distance - given your measurement requirements - is less than the thickness of my drivers license.

Sorry if I(we)'ve highjacked this thread - this all seems relevant. Thanks all...

from the fret there is almost no space lol if it take EB thin pick and try to slip it under it moves the string

Holy ****! A fifth of an inch! I'd rather have a fifth of Patron. You sure that is correct?

Oh ****ing wow! Never noticed that before but apparently **** and **** are filtered.

Has this always been this way or is this a recent edit to the board? It's always the odd little things that fascinate me. :D

If this post is deemed negative or just plain empty of value , let me know, I'll delete it (or one of the moderators is welcome to do the same)
