The BA humbucker is ceramic, no? The SSS is neo, I thought.

Take a closer look.

Here's a handy field guide:

Cool and cooler! But neo plays a fender. Where's the MM content? How do I know, I ran sound for his band and I don't think I have ever seen more unmentionables flying at at a show. But then I have never worked with Tom Jones. :D

I'm dying to know if this or the SSS is 'better' if thats the right word.

Usually, it isn't. "Different" for sure, and there's always the X factor of personal preference. I mean, Jack likes flats, fercryinoutloud.

What I'm interested in is how the flavor is different.

One of these two basses is hopefully in my future… got a major milestone wedding anniversary coming up and that's what I'm going to ask for. The only question (NAMM revelations notwithstanding) is which one.

I've established beyond doubt that if I'm going to own a bass, it has to be enough of a departure from what I've already got that there's a real reason to play it.

Earlier this year I owned a rare Bongo 5HS briefly. Despite its coolness (it was green) I think I actually played it maybe five times. Never gigged, never rehearsed. It just wasn't different enough. So, no reason to keep it.

What I really want to know -- and Jack is the perfect guy to tell us because he's got all the same basses I do -- is which of these two is farthest from the Bongo HH and Bongo H. I'm thinking it's the SSS, but there's nothing like a first-hand report.

Regardless of what he says, I know Jack will do a superb job. He's a better writer than I am, and I've been doing it for a living since the Carter administration.

Hmmm, I'll have to give that idea some thought. Next year is 25, maybe I can pull the same thing.

There's a precedent - my wife and M-I-L bought my first EBMM (my Sterling) about ten years ago.

I've been trying to stay away ... couldn't escape the gravity today. So I come in and the first thing I see ... is this. Pretty much picks up right where I left off, mentally. Beauty, Jack. Major congrats.
