You know who hates MM basses?

The aftermarket industry, that's who.
Think about all the aftermarket parts available for other basses like:
Pickups, electronics, necks, tuners, bridges, etc.
It must be a huge business for folks like Warmouth, WD, etc.

When you think about it, there really is no need to make these changes to MM basses as the factory stuff is high quality and well thought out

And, if you want a cosmetic change the factory offers pickgaurds in nearly every color under the sun at fair prices

Good point. Though you see it from time to time, people seem fairly rarely compelled to mod their EBMM stuff. I've done it on everything from Fender to Fodera, but the thought hasn't even crossed my mind on any of my EBMM basses, other than minor cosmetic stuff along the lines of Jacks' fine art pickguards ... but never quite that cultured.

I never understand why someone would change a EBMM bass, especially the electronics....absolutely daft IMO. They are made for the bass, and are the only 'true' EBMM tone you are going to get.

pickguards are a reasonable modification. brings personality to the instrument. I am talking about some peoples constant need to twiddle, to hum and haw about that pickup or that pot, or that bridge. Just buy the right gear in the first place, and play it already!

I never thought that I should modify any MusicMan bass. I once had a natural velvet/rosewood Ray where the pre-owner had mounted a MM tort guard. But I don't consider a pickguard as modification...

I do agree with this in the main, except when it comes to the neck, I am a BIG fan of graphite, never made a secret of it, especially Status graphite ( which is good enough for EBMM!) So I would like to see that as an option, but the overall set up of a Ray is what makes it a Ray in my book.
