Guilty as charged.
Michael Brecker plays it the best though, his tone always touches my heart.

Too funny, yeah guilty as charged. That is pretty incredible how all of those were compiled.

At the expense of outing myself as a musical idiot (with bad hearing to boot)... Is it 1 3 5 8 5 1 3 (i.e. C E G C' G C E) on a Major scale?

It's a minor, methinks. Try a run on the natural minor scale.

Since you used C, here it is

C F G Ab Bb G Eb F

If the flats throw you, try it in a minor

A D E F G E C D

Of course, I'm just doing this from what's in my head, not watching the clips or anything, so I may have my head up my butt.

Since I have my head up my butt most of the time anyway, this would not be surprising.

The important part of the lick itself is just the five notes in the middle. A lot of those clips have different things going on at the beginning or end.

D E F G E (if in a minor)
