As a long-time member, a supporter of EBMM instruments, a friend of BP and in my sometimes challenging role as moderator, I have to say that I’m never exactly happy when we lose people. Yes, occasionally it can be a relief – there have been two or three times when I hit the “ban” button and did a little dance – but that’s the exception rather than the rule. I haven’t danced lately.
We did lose a couple of people this week and I want to clear some things up. Not the details of how they took their leave, but rather the overarching issues that have been a part of it.
If, for example, a person chooses a username which itself is clearly a riff on a sexual act, that person should think twice before claiming that someone else is using sexual innuendos. I don’t mind having goalposts, but let’s make sure they stay in the same basic location. I guess from now on I’ll have to police up the usernames. Maybe that will be my early-warning system.
You guys are bassists. You’re not supposed to be high-maintenance. (That’s for lead singers.) The people that fall by the wayside, whether by their own hand or mine, tend to be extremely high-maintenance. Is this a coincidence? You can make the call for yourself, but my opinion should be self-evident.
If you find yourself sending me or other members multiple PMs about how so-and-so isn’t paying enough attention to YOU or how some other person said something vaguely insulting about YOU or Sterling doesn’t love YOU enough or anything else along those lines, guess what?
You’re a lead singer! But here’s the other aspect of that. There is an ‘ignore’ button. And, I might add, the guys who absconded over the last couple of days were high on the list of ‘most ignored’. Nothing personal, just the stats. I cannot use the ignore feature as I’m supposed to be reading simply everything, but no one else is required to read every post, especially if someone gets up your nose. Use the ignore button.
Listen: “THE FORUM” isn’t responsible if someone posts something disagreeable. If it crosses the line, I’ll get to it soon enough, usually within a matter of hours. Even Lord Bongo must sleep (and change diapers). THE FORUM is not to blame, nor is the OWNER OF THE FORUM nor even THE GUYS WHO MODERATE THE FORUM. Somebody posted something not quite kosher – okay, fine. You can either use the ignore button, report the post - or wait a couple of hours and see if it’s taken care of, but don’t assume that all posts are approved of or endorsed by anyone except the person who wrote the damned post.
Of course, a little bit of common sense goes a long way. I read all the bass forums to some extent and am a member of most of them. If people talk trash about me or the forum elsewhere, odds are that I will never acknowledge it on the other forums – but neither will I pretend that I haven’t seen/read it. The Bassist Internet isn’t that big.
Last point: attempting to drum up support against the forum ON THE FORUM ITSELF is just dumb. This includes multiple PMs to others…sooner rather than later, someone will forward the damned thing to me. Or the IT guy will start wondering about the flurry and ask himself, “What’s going on here?”
Overall, however, things are going really well. I've been here a long time and there have been bumps in the road....but the road goes on.
