So to close the loop a bit: I definitely don't have the problem with a wired connection or with an analog UHF wireless, just my sony digital wireless. However, sony just released a firmware update to my wireless and after updating mine, the clipping issue is gone! Thanks Sony!

Glad to hear that's resolved. Pretty much what I had assumed, but I'm glad Sony resolved it. I'm betting it happens on way more instruments than just Bongos.
I was playing in my studio last night and noticed that my Sterling 5 HH actually sends a hotter signal than my Bongo 6HS. It was IIRC 2-3dB hotter. I'm really interested in my what fretless 5HSp will produce with mag, mag+piezo and piezo only...
