Your best Music Man sales pitch....

If you had to convince someone who has never played one to pickup a Music Man what would be your initial pitch? Would you pitch sound? Playability? Company history? Artist that use the product?

If you have ever dealt with me you know there are a few things that I say over and over again ... but I want to know what is most important or unique about Music Man in your eyes... what attracted you? Was is an artist? or was it a salesman that opened your eyes to something that you didn’t know about the product?

I went through 13 basses or thereabouts looking for the one that makes the sound I've got in my head.

I did graphite. I did fancy wood. I did neck-through, laminated throbbin' purplevein. I tried to copy my heroes' equipment. I built a bass from parts once. I ripped the guts out of basses and replaced them with the fanciest boo-teek pickups and preamps I could find. I was seriously considering buying a $2500 long-scale custom bass from a well-known upstate NY builder with the initials MT.

Then I tried a Bongo.

Game over.

My best pitch was with a drummer continually insisting I give his 70s Fender Jazz a go because it so had the 'vibe' for the funk we were doing. I finally said sure, bring it down to a rehearsal. He did. We plugged it in and fiddled around and around like crazy till we the coolest sound we could find. Then I just said, OK, lets plug the stingray in. We did. Greatest sales pitch ever. I wish ya'll couldda been there.

I'd say something like this... "These are REALLY GOOD, give this Bongo a spin..." because once they pick it up and play it, I KNOW they wouldn't want to put it down... :)

i just think you have to play one. that being said i really don't think it sounds better than any of my other basses , just different. you can't go wrong with a musicman, they're great basses.

Very good fit and finish; perhaps the best for a production made bass
Forward thinking on body shapes, electronics, and pup configuration
Outstanding factory and dealer support
Limted run instruments and colors
Cult following and not something you will see on that many stages

Think about the huge industry created by Fender and all the copies including the botique shops
Now think about how many have done anything that is any different than an old 50's P or 60's J other than adding a preamp
MM may have started with a Leo idea, but they have created new designs and not rested solely on that one item; how many can claim that other than the super limited hand made builders?
Crap, I think I just sold myself on a Big Al or Bogo.....

My story is kinda like Joe Nerve's..

My drummer: "Hey MK, why don't you try 'this-that----or the other..on this song, oh how bout this one"

ME: Hey Drummer buddy, instead of me explaining the law of physics to you...shut up and play, and listen to this bass...

Now: he's says: did you bring the Music Man?


Best sales pitch for MusicMan - Plug it in, and freakin' play it.

tell the little nerds that if they get a stingray, girls like this will walk up to them and say... and i quote..."that is sooo beautiful, i want to caress it, can i have my picture taken with it... and you?."

Brandt... point at the large humbucker and say game over! I have sold a few for Guitars Centers that way not even being an employee! JOSH

Try one. It's built like a tank,rumbles like thunder,will move you like an earthquake but will sound as sweet as an ocean wave if need be. (Built in America,not by two blind china men.)

i think the best one i ever saw was what adouglas once did to describe how a bongo sounded...by posting a picture of godzilla


nothing i could come up with can beat that...
