Your thoughts on double necks...

Hi Guys,

Well, I must admit that I was completely blown away by the recent new guitar day posted by crazyregis featuring his emerald green double neck.

I've always wanted a double neck, but I wouldn't have any use for a 12 string. I never play anything that sounds clean and jingle-jangly. You know what I mean. We've all seen, and lusted after, Joe Bonamassa's double neck. His looks like it has a baritone neck.

My question to you is: Which neck combo would you find most useful?

I would like a 6 string and a bass. I think that would be really fun to play. I'd be in my music room (Tollywood) late at night, the only light coming from my pedal board and amp. I'd become deeply entranced by my own bass groove, and then switch over to guitar and let her rip. Dare to dream boys!

I like the 6 string & 12 string combo. I use it once in a while with the band, typically on "Shimmer" "Dear Prudence" & "Surrender".

Weight is pretty important to me, so unless a double neck is made from balsa wood, I don't think I'd ever have a use for one. Heck....a Les Paul is over my acceptable weight limit.

Personally, I hate 12 strings, so I answered 6 + baritone. That said, 6 plus mandolin (either 4 or 8 string) would be cool too.

The coolest double-neck I ever saw was Geddy's - so I had to vote 6+4!

Played one once. That was all it took for me. Didn't like it. Too bulky for me. However, IF I were to get one it would be the 12 and 6 string variety. Cool pic Pete!!

I'd probably go for a 6 and 12. EBMMs are nearly impossible to find. I'd probably only get one if I were gigging and I really needed it, or liked it and worked it into the show, but double necks are very esoteric to me in general anyway. But I'd like to try one out for a while.

I've always wanted a double neck with a regular 6-string guitar neck and a mandolin neck. Doubt that will ever come out of the MM factory

I'd have to go with the 6/12. I personally love the sound of a 12 string.

6 and 6 string, have one be fretless and in an Open Tuning. That's what I'd do, you could use them easily in unison without having to focus one more on the other. You can play the open chord on the Fretless and solo over it with the Standard or whatever tuning Fretted 6 String.

I think they fit a partic-ular purpose for some, but for me they seems very bulky, heavy and somewhat overkill. I think these days with processors, you can get the 12 string and baritone sounds out of a normal guitar.

But hey, horses for courses and all that!
